I wasn't old enough to follow Oscar throughout his career, but you have to be an idiot to think he wasn't a beast. His style wasn't pretty, but it was effective
DLH is one of those fighters that it was fashionable to **** on because you got sick of his cheesy nice boy persona, that said he is very undervalued by fans imo. People say he lost all his biggest fights but its also a case of he did not get the official decision in some of his biggest fights, sure i thought he lost to Quartey and Sturm, although that (Sturm) was when ODLH was older and well above his natural weight but i felt he beat Shane (rematch) and Tito and that his record would of looked much better if those names were on there, im not gonna crucify him because the judges that night were incompetent, id say if i thought he lost to Shane and Tito as i thought he lost to Quartey clearly. I scored the Whitaker fight and had DLH by 1 round if i recall, however on reflection i always say to people that neither man deserved to win that, not DLH, nor Pea. The fact that people make out that was a clear win for Pea lets you know how many unbalanced opinions there are about that fight, either they dislike ODLH or cant accept that ODLH beat Pea, listen whether he did or did'nt it was an extremely close fight that was hard to score so i dont think you could moan either way, yet people do.
I think he was very good too. I saw some clips of his fight with mosley. first fight, he arguably lost. but the second fight, I thought he clearly won. that perhaps evens out his "win" over sturm.
and don't get me started on that tito fight. tito blood was all over dlh shorts. I thought he won that fight hands down.
Olympic gold Dominant wins at lightweight against extremely high calibre opposition with two titles unified. Shredded Chavez (Who was WBC Champion at 140lbs) Shut out Miguel Angel Gonzalez and looked positively lethal Bettered Whitaker (Who was WBC Champion at 147lbs). I thought Pernell won by a point but it could have gone either way. Sparked Oba Carr who was still effective with one shot. Came out blasting against Quartey to earn a decision in one of the best last round assaults in the history of boxing. Boxed Trinidad's ears off and should have earned a unanimous decision. Earned acclaim for a razor thin losing effort to Mosley in a CLASSIC. Arguably a better fight than Leonard vs. Hearns one. Knocked out Vargas to unify two titles. Vargas was bigger, stronger and juiced. Beat Mosley out the park in a rematch. Will never understand anyones scoring who gave this to Shane. Won the middleweight title from Sturm. I gave it to Sturm by two. Oscar was flat and out of shape but he still fought a decent fight. Had the balls to mix it up with Hopkins beofre being stopped by a man 15-20lbs heavier. Staple gunned Mayorga to the deck and slapped his dumb ass side ways in six and took another title. Pushed Floyd to the limit who looked phased until a 34 year old De La Hoya tired. The fact that anyone can put this man down when jag offs like Calzaghe fought scores of stiffs on the spin only to be lauded as an ATG turns my ****in stomach. Oscar was for real and any champion he faced (Pacquiao and Hopkins aside) would tell you they were given all they could handle win or lose. NOW! **** THIS THREAD!
I've watched the Sky UK version, the HBO version and the Top Rank PPV. You can't throw a fight away when you've CLEARLY dominated the first nine rounds! Tito barely put two punches together and was given a ****in clinic!
I saw the fight twice. and for the first 8 rounds, dlh was schooling tito and I seriously doubt if Tito won more than 2 rounds of it. on the last few rounds, dlh stepped off the gas, true. but I still did not think it was enough to make tito win. but then again, tito had don king.
I have not watched it for a long time but i distinctly remember dlh sparking and stinging tito, for the first few rounds. how did you score the fight?
I liked Oscar best at 135-140, but I agree he was very very good in the 2nd Mosley fight, which I felt he won clearly (same with the Tito fight). Great fighter.
