I would only pay for it on television if I were not able to go to it live. Big George was the first fighter that I followed when I was a child. It didn't bother me at all but the media at the time sure didn't seem to like Larry too much. I have always been a huge fan of both of them. Wait a minute, what am I doing posting again. Back to lurking ... carry on ladies and gentlemen ... I thoroughly enjoy reading what you folks have to discuss about the sweet science. :thumbsup

One bout I would pay NOT to see. Two of the best heavies in my lifetime. It would be a travesty to see the them in the ring with each other,or anyone else at their current ages.

This is why I think George never took the fight. He didnt want to be outboxed and knew Larry represented a really tough fight for him.

I guess it is just a man's instinct, but I was about to argue with you since I started the post and I do not totally agree with some of your comments. Then I realized that these are 60+ YEAR OLD MEN! It might be a horrendous fight but I still feel like these guys have unfinished business. Considering that they did not fight when they should have(in the 70s or 80s), fans were cheated of a very interesting fight (in their prime) that could have added more credibility to both careers. However, if I am truly being honest with myself, I would have to admit that your comments are pretty much spot on.

Even up to 1999,I'd have relished these two fighting. Now would be a different matter. Obviously the 70's would have been the best time. In reality there would only have been a small window in which they could have duked it out in that decade though, which would have been 1976/77. Foreman retired in '77 and Holmes would n't have been ready anytime before 1976.

I forgot how long Foreman was retired. I think his comeback started in '87, which was after Holmes lost to Spinks twice. Glad you brought that up. Foreman was not ready to fight top caliber opponents untill '90 or '91. Neither fighter would have wanted that fight in the late 80s. Foreman needed more fights and Holmes was bitter after Spinks and looked like he did not care when he fought Tyson in '88. Like you said, there was a very small window in the 70s for them to fight, but Holmes was still probably not ready in '76/'77 and I'm not sure a win over Holmes would have done anything for Foreman at that point. A fight around '92-'94 probably would have been entertaining, although it would have none of the magnitude of a fight in their prime(or for a world championship).

The best time to make the fight would have been right after Holmes lost to Holyfield. Foreman gave Holyfield a decent fight the year before, and Holmes just extended the same Holyfield the 12-round limit. Foreman and Holmes were the two Golden Oldies, and they both still had fair amounts of skills left. At that point, Holmes wasn't so disrespectful towards Foreman as he would become later on. I know there was talks about putting that fight together in late '92 or early '93...Even Bob Arum mentioned putting that fight together during the post-fight interview following Larry Holmes' loss against Holyfield....But the fight fell through!

I think it is an absolute tragedy that some of our greats like Frazier, Holmes, Foreman, even guys like Cooney, Ellis, Young, Norton as well Tyson, Bowe and Holyfield, dont regularly spar and match with varying degrees of seriousness on current cards. I know that i would definitely pay to see these guys fight. In fact, i think i would rather see Holmes / Foreman (whether serious, semi serious, or just plain fun) than most of todays current active fighters.

What about an exhibition between say Michael Spinks and Roy Jones Junior? Or Wladimir Klitchsko vs Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitchsko vs Mike Tyson. At least it would help put the media spotlight back on boxing.

Then again what would i know, I saw Fenech Nelson III for what it was an interesting exercise that proved nothing but was still reasonably enjoyable.

Excellent call! I completely agree. They both had just proven they could push the current champ the distance. A credible fight between two 40 somethings! That would have absolutely been the perfect time for the fight and it would have meant something.

Yes,it was some promoter from England as I recall. They left all kinds of unpaid hotel bills in either Dallas or Houston.

Yeah, the two promoters were music industry guys I think, or at least one of them was. But Foreman and Holmes pocketed a lot of money just for signing the contract, so we can't feel too bad about things. At the time I might have favored Foreman to win, as he seemed to age a little better in terms of retaining more of his natural skill set than did Holmes. Foreman looked a lot better against Savarese and Briggs than did Holmes against Harris and a Navarre and Donaldson. Holmes looked pretty lively against McCall, but he lost a lot after that. He started fighting real lazy and lethargic like, and his puncihg power, which was never great to begin with, sank a lot.
