However I dont actually know that pav was a "white hope" more a champion from a fairly poor area that got him a lot of coverage.

I dont think pavlik got more haded to him than did Jermain Taylor

 

As I've said numerous times, boxing is the one sport that people associate with race more than any other sport. Not everyone, clearly... But a lot more than in other sports. Whites root for whites and blacks root for blacks, as well as pueartoricans, mexicans, and philipinos rooting for their own. It happens.


And kelly pavlik being the only white American in the curent elites, makes him a real good draw. He has benefited from it without a doubt, but I ain't particularly mad at him. If I was a white boy I would do the same ****. So ****ing what?


And at the same time, you can't get mad at Hop for mentioning it.

 

why doesnt he talk about the calzaghe fight the last time i looked calzaghe was white and old and he beat hopkins ass. Pavlik was never that good anyway just because he beat taylor who everyone is koing these days doesnt make him a white hope.

 

In a way, I think among boxing fan's, nationality trumps race.
I mean I thought when a klit got a belt, boxing would blow up in the states because of a white HW champ. It didnt.

Its strange you say that about race , boxing gyms ( in glasgow anyway since thats really the only ones I've been in seem to be the least racially tense places I've ever seen, in a city that has its own race issues

We are not talking about white in general. We're talking about white Americans. pavlik was the only white American elite when he burst onto the scene. And he reaped the benefits here in America. You guys have a bunch of bad-ass white dudes in boxing. It's not the same thing.

I think the whole "i'll never let a white guy beat me" thing was just hype for the fight. It was a good idea. Similar to throwing the Puerto Rican flag down before the fight...these guys are businessmen, they arent just fighting for fun. :huh
