What in the hell is going on with Juan Manuel Marquez?

I have his career set, he has some awesome fights.

 

Darryl, I think he's just "old" and tired and took a shellacking in his only decisive and dominant loss of his career...And I doubt he needs much money after that shellacking. I question how much hunger he has to do much else before retiring. All I've heard is that they're close to making a rematch with Juan Diaz...which to me, signals that he's ready to leave. A rematch with a dude he knocked out, after he turned down a go at a fourth weight class world title(Amir Khan). ON ADVICE OF HIS OWN TRAINER even. That's a terrible sign. But I do believe he was pushing it at lightweight.

 

After bloating himself to dance with Floyd, Marquez has no option but fight in 140 where Bradley, Maidana, or even Amir will whoop his ass.

 

I dont think anyone has announced what type of money Marquez turned down for Khan.......my guess is that they did'nt offer him much more to fight Khan that he's going to get to fight Diaz.

Marquez has already been taken advantage too many times financially.
.......and Nacho Beristain no longer trusts that GBP has JMM best interest after what they let Mayweather get away with at the scales.

If GBP wants JMM fighting the likes of Khan and Valero, they're going to have to pay him handsomely for the risk, otherwise at his age, Marquez is well within his rights to wait for a 140 lbs title challenge that suits his style and liking.

The Floyd beating took a lot out of him. Hope he comes back though, he's a great fighter.

 

At this point, he's too old and has lost a lot of speed. He seems to have trouble defending himself now, especially in the early rounds. Being a slow starter will doom him against a big puncher, and I can see guys like Khan and Maidana possibly koing him.

 

He needs to pick an opponent that offers:

1. A decent payday
2. A worthy name to further cement his legacy and highlight him among fans as a notable warrior
3. A fairly well matched opponent that makes it so that the weight struggle he'll have to endure after skipping so much isn't as much of a factor.

I don't think Marquez is shot, but I want to see an exciting fight that does justice to his name. A third Pacquiao bout would be great but he is past his prime and out of his ideal weight range, so unless he is supremely confident, I would not want to see his credit lost because of an unecessary re-rematch. Juan Diaz is not a good choice in my opinion but it's the safe route. I don't think he ducked Khan, he just chose not to take the fight because of the utter lack of benefit he gets in using up one of his last fights to a hyped-up glass-jawed talent with little established credibility. I have been watching his fights recently and he's definitely a favorite of mine, vastly underrated, the only real loss he's ever had was to a top fighter way above his weight class coming in two pounds over the limit to begin with. He's really been G'd way too many times, the sport has been cold to his career. I hope history and boxing fan culture is kind and reverent of him in the decades to come.

totally right...Marquez is not washed up... I think it was smart to turn down Khan. HBO is going to announce a tournament at 140 very soon

 

Maybe it should have been a better idea if they'd just stuck to their old TOP RANK promotional contract, around 5 years ago.

Yeah, Arum is not the most pleasant guy in the world, but he could have made the high profile/big payday match ups easier for them.

 

Though GBP did'nt back JMM on the scales with Mayweather, they're 100X better than Bob Arum....

Unless you're an established boxing star, this is how Arum treats his other fighters under his unbrella, "listen you dumb****, you take what I offer you or take nothing."

Arum has been known to treat the latino fighter as some uneducated hillbilly, fresh down from a mountaintop cave.

 

How many fights do you think Juan has left in him?
