On another forum site there was discussion of all time PPV buys. The guy who started the thread posted that Ali vs Frazier I in 1971 had 300 million closed circuit customers for the fight and blew DLH-PBF out of the water. When he was challenged about such a claim he offered PROOF!
Wow!....and we have been led to believe that popular boxing events didn't even begin until De La Hoya started on PPV. Whats all of the arguing about who is bigger Mayweather or Pacquiao in comparison to these numbers?

the first article says 300 million watched it on closed circuit television around the WORLD. And probably many of those people in other countries didn't pay a dime.

i didn't bother reading the rest.

If people went to theaters and arenas to watch on closed circuit do you think that it was offered to them for FREE? It is your opinion that they did not pay a dime?

Even if 300,000,000 watched for FREE that is more than De La Hoya, Pacquiao and Mayweather combined in all of their fights.

now a days fights get shown in 100s of countries as well, its only north american PPV that the likes of HBO count, you cant sell fifty dollar PPVs to poor countries at 5 am

    LOL

PPV as such didnt even exist then the radio numbers were probbly 500 million though

frazier-ali was the biggest boxing event in history
2 undefeated world champs against eachother, summin that will probably never happen again
    ali was world famous
he was able to get a whole country behind him in ziare when he faced foreman and no one knew who was gunna win the ali frazier fight
it shuldnt b hard 2 believe this many people watched the fight as it was shown in theaters
thats what they did wiv the mayweather marquez fight 2 generate more ppv buys

yeah thats true but for it to equal 300 million people it would need about 150 people watchin for every 1 ppv buy

Doesnt closed circuits include places such as bars? I mean if theres 300 people watching at the bar that would count towards the 300mil right...

PPV is a different beast today.

Not everyone could just call up and order PPV, you had to go to a theater and watch the closed circuit fights.

Of course way more ppl watched Ali/Frazier than DLH/floyd.
