Trust me I was around when the fight happened. They may have had 300 Million people watching it, a number I don't doubt as the world stopped and watched this fight. But PPV didn't exist back then, it was televised.

Inflation and cable distribution are completely different.

This isn't even worth comparing. Some people STILL don't know who floyd mayweather jr is.

They had to be PAID viewers. It was reported that 300 million watched via closed circuit. That means theaters and arenas, People would have to pay to attend.

No way that it was 300 million who PAID for closed circuit.

Today, 40 years later and the world population being much much bigger, only the World Cup and a few other sporting events can generate those numbers on FREE TV.

Champions League, F1 races and the Superbowl don't get even get those numbers on free television.

Also, fights like DLH-PBF are show around the world, including China, so their numbers are very good.

...and one more thing, the douche who started the thread on boxrec is a well known MMA troll.

LOL at the guy who started the original thread after his inane ramblings were proven wrong:

"I am not an investigative reporter and honestly do not have the time to research further"

    Yeah...good one.

Well read it for yourself and see what you think. It sounded factual to me. CBS, NBC and the Associated Press all reported that 300 million watched via CLOSED CIRCUIT. What does that mean if it doesn't mean 300 million people watched via closed circuit? Do you know for a fact that they opend arenas and theaters around the world and allowed the millions to watch for FREE?
Also I didn't see anything in the post about MMA, it was a fair report about boxing. Why are you being defensive and attacking this guy?

    Thanks.

You sound like you're living the life, especially if you got a house on the beach.

But either way, if I did show up, I would respect your ****. Always do.

That poster regularly spams boxing message boards with constant anti-boxing and pro MMA talk.

Look at that same thread, the fight generated 18 million. It would mean that those 300 million people only paid a few cents to watch the broadcast on CCTV.

There is no doubt that this was one of the most watched fights of all time and a gigantic sporting event, but the 300 million figure must have largely been from free TV around the world. Outside of the World Cup and the opening ceremony of the Olympics almost nothing generates that sort of audience...and this is on free tv and 40 years later. I'm sure that it was CCTV for the original broadcast in North America but they must have added the following delayed TV broadcast in the US and the live free broadcasts around the world.

Regardless of who the poster is the links clearly talk about 300,000,000 people watching the fight live on closed circuit. There is nothing that talks about later replays in those numbers. I read that it was the most watched live event of any kind in history up to that point even bigger than the first moon landing. Why does that have to be disputed? Apparently it challenges the De La Hoya, Mayweather and Pacquiao are the kings of the boxing universe myth? or what?
    These are facts.

I don't think it translates. We're talking about 300 million viewers worldwide, not 300 million people paying $50-60 each for a PPV.

Back then people would have paid $10. Remember gas was 24 cents a gallon then.

Maybe during that time theaters only charged $1.00 in India and $3.00 in Greece for the fight. Still 300 million people paid to watch this event on closed circuit televison. That event sold the most buys to view a boxing event in history.
