Fights that should've never happened

I tend to assume a loose parity between eras, but this is the one case where I can honestly say that the champion could have been a journeyman or gatekeeper in an era where the champion could still have been champion.

LPR rules were so loaded towards a fighter surviving that quick knockouts were virtualy unknown.

I normaly say that there is no such thing as a weak era.

Yes it was emotion, but I dont think the fight should have been mention on this list. Like Marciano wrecking though the divsion to get his shot vs Walcott, Louis was doing his part in clearing out the divsion.

Both were headed into a clash with each other with the number of contenders between them, and it was belive at the time, the winner would later get a shot at the title, which happen when Marciano beat Louis and clean out the rest of the Matthews ete.

Louis didnt fight for the title after Charles, he was working his way back up, and doing a pretty good job. Perhaps had there been no Marciano, Louis may have gotting that 2nd shot at the title(Or 3rd shot if you count Braddock)

 

Joe Frazier's judgement was horrible in regards to matching up Marvis with Holmes and Tyson..he had far too much blind faith in his son, and no common sense in these matters at all.

 

Wasn't it the 10th round for Ali Holmes, with Ali not answering for the 11th?

 

Yeah, pretty sad.

Whoever said the Jerry Quarry-Rom Crammer "fight" was right square on the money.

I saw a terrible fight the other day on YouTube- Bobby Czyz beating up David Sears- that could have been withheld from us without much protest.

Billy Backus getting his facial structure rearranged by Pipino Cuevas back in the day seems a little pointless in retrospect as well.

 

The two Pac fights are really only obvious with hindsight. At the time it seemed logical that there would be a third and final bout with Morales, despite the signs of Morales slipping. (It would have been a small mercy however if Morales hadn't been so obviously drained and out on his feet the moment he hit the ring though). As for the Oscar, that was all De La Hoya's matchmaking and everyone was afraid for Pacquiao's sake prior to the fight. Most of the fights were obvious train wrecks even before the fight happened, whereas you had to be a very sharp operator to see the signs of that with Pac-Hoya.

Marvis wasn't entirely a horrible fighter, although he obviously had chin issues that should have kept him out of championship level matches. He was definitely thrown into the deep end of the boxing pool far too early, (he could have had a entirely respectable career fighting second string type bouts, but he was in over his head with the best) and he used entirely the wrong style.

Frazier tried to trian Marvis to fight like him, and Marvis was eager to imitate his father's style, but Marvis functioned much better as a boxer than he did copying his father. That's also why, if I remember correctly, Holmes and Tyson are his only losses. Most of his other fights he used his head and common sense better, but particularly in the Holmes bout he abandoned that and tried to fight like daddy, and got his ass whipped. (In the Tyson bout that isn't so much at fault, he just got bull rushed like so many early Tyson opponents).

 

I'll go for one not mentioned yet: Tyson-Lewis.

I believe that if Tyson had fought Lewis a few months after Golota and stayed in decent shape below 225lbs, this would have been a competitive fight (although i'd still expect Lewis to win.) Instead the fool took a year out before fighting Nielson in poor shape (240lbs) where he looked awful and gassed, then took another year out before fighting Lewis at a lazy 234lbs, managing to look embarrassingly horrible in every round bar the first.

 

Duran v Hearns .. Duran's camp must have been crazy to allow this fight to happen .. Stylistically an impossible job for Duran ..

And all the obvious ones like Ali v Holmes etc
