i think he has decent punching power, he just dosent sit and rely on it the way he should, he dosent go for the KO, or if he does, he dosent try for it hard enough. Aside from the fact that the guy has never been knocked out in over forty fights.

With the buzz Gamboa is creating it's obvious that other Cuban talents - since we got one good in like 10 years before - are being compared to Yuri or the expectations are sky high. But Lara at 26 is at a different stage of his career compared to the Olympic gold medallists, has different gifts and attitude and a very different style. He's a thinking boxer with textbook skills outshining the flashy stuff which is not necessarily a bad thing. Also, with not peaking at the amateurs and many fights less, IMO he's much more capable of improving especially with a pro trainer like Ronnie Shields.

There's room for more in almost every area, his comination skills are awesome, but as stated, needs to be more aggressive and throw more. He's not a one punch KO guy, but power can come with improved balance, timing and accuracy, so let's just wait and see how much he can improve. On the other hand, he fought solid guys lately, very solid for a 10-fight guy, Brewer is a cagey veteran who was unbeaten in 5 years incl. the win of The Contender and a couple of prospects, and was supposet to fight top elite Winky Wright. Perez was a good experience also. There's absolutely nothing good comes from blowing away bums other than the "wow" factor, but Lara skipped that part of his career. I say get him more Brewers and Perez', that how he'll improve rapidly!

As someone of Cuban ancestry, and a native of Miami it annoys me that these guys don't fight in Miami more often.

THIS, is what you call a TRUE boxing fan. someone that can understand the development of fighters and can appreciate solid boxing skills instead of criticizing a fighter for his lack of KO's. great post man:good

I couldn't agree with this sentiment more.

Having one punch KO power is not all there is to boxing.

As for Lara's punching power, he can hit, but he chooses to fight smart. Which is the whole point to boxing, in case you kids forgot.

I'm tired of seeing guys like Lara, who use there natural talents to just wail away on guys but never bother thinking to set up their opponent for a shot they aren't prepared to take. Dimetrius Andre was just as bad last night.

I'm not asking for a guy to have 1 punch KO power but I'd like to see these guys slow the pace down quite a bit. Take some more chances to try to hit a guy with well timed shots. These big haymakers that are thrown from left feild and are designed to keep guys off of them as much (if not more) then they are intended to hurt get repetitive after5 or 6 rounds of the same thing over and over.

Erislandy Lara, even now, would have Paul Williams head on a silver plate.

I did not see the Perez fight, but I did see the Brewer fight. Grady Brewer is my favorite journeyman, so I know exactly what he is capable of. Brewer is a spoiler who snatches zeros away from undefeated prospects like a bully stealing candy from a child. He did not get Lara's zero, or even come close to taking it.

Lara fought Brewer the right way. If he had gone crazy head hunting and looking for the KO, Brewer would have beat him up and knocked him out! Lara did a good job in that fight. I wouldn't call it a "great" job, but he did do a good job, and ultimately stopped Brewer.

And by the way, at the time I thought Lara's team had lost their freaking minds when they put Lara in a 10 rounder against Brewer in only his 10th pro fight.
