something interesting came out of the guzman-funeka commentary the other day. someone stated that effecient, professional fighters like funeka can have trouble ad******g and hitting the gas and changing it up against flashier, more eye catching fighters like guzman. i think funeka is a smaller, poor man's pavlik in some ways. both in attitude and style. martinez, while no guzman, is a bit flashy and certainly unorthodoz at time. if sergio is scoring with eye catching blows and stealing rounds, how do you think pavlik will adjust? do you think he'll have trouble changing from his business as usual, workmanlike style?

btw: why the **** is ****** being edited??

Pavlik said some things in an interview with Fan House that lead me to belive he won't need to make any major adjustments during the fight. I do not think the slugger/stalker is going to show up. I won't be surprised if he puts on a clinic around how to use a left hook and a lead right against a quick/mobile southpaw.

You should change the title to 'Less than two weeks until Pavlik steps in the ring with another smaller, hand-picked opponent with many stylistic disadvantages, instead of facing one of the top contenders in his own weight class or stepping up to '68 and getting his arse handed to him by his daddy Lucian Bute'

I suspect that there will be times when the jab/right hand works quite well. Martinez regularly rushes in to throw a lead left, and telegraphs it from about 3 feet out. However, this won't be a Taylor 1 type fight. Like Leow said, "It's a basic ****ing fight with this kid. Jab-right hand, simple." That was extremely effective against Jermain, but it wouldn't work against Sergio.

    TS is a douchebag.

As much as I hate Pavlik, I would never want to see him carried out on a stretcher.

definitely agree. there will be times but sergio is a damn southpaw and an awkward one at that. the 1-2 will be ineffective for the part, especially with his movement. pavlik will have to set traps and use a more varied attack this time. the straight right will obviously be his best weapon but he'll need to do more to set it up this time. i see it being a brilliant fight and pavlik will have to dig deep at times, but that will make the win sweeter

To an extent I agree with you, but we are in a small minority when we say Martinez has stylisitc disadvantages. Most people believe it's Pavlik who is at a stylisitc disadvantage.

As far as "top contenders" at 160, name a few who can beat Martinez, will take the fight, and are available no later than mid April.

Finally, Pavlik can't fight Bute. Lucian is busy fighting Pavlik's left overs, and then he has a mandatory with the Brinkley/Bika winner.

Yeah, that's true. If I remember right, Pavlik said he may stop Hopkins "quickly", so you may be on to something!

...that or Pavlik just had the confidence beaten out of him by an old man? Maybe that's why he is being humble? On the other hand, Martinez has reason to be confident, after taking a guy Pavlik seemingly avoided, to the limit, despite poor preparation. Why wouldn't Martinez be confident?

You're gonna be in for a surprise come fight night. Pavlik will have huge problems with the movement, speed, and slickness of Martinez. Pavlik might be 3 inches taller, but Martinez actually has a 1 inch reach advantage. The size won't be a big factor.

Pavlik's power would be a problem for Martinez if he could land consistently, but he won't be able to.

    Martinez UD.

This guy is classless. Assuming Pavlik ever fights a guy like Bute, Kessler, Abraham or Froch, he will get absolutely battered. I hope nothing happens to Pavlik, but if he was carried out on a stretcher, something tells me this fanboy won't be trivializing it.

When I watch Martinez I always think of the term "skitterbug." The guy skitters all over the whole ring. He moves fast and he moves a lot.

However, not all movement is intelligent movement. Martinez wastes a lot of energy on mindless movement for the sake of movement.

He circles the wrong way, he rushes in face first rather than coming in behind a good jab, and he often backs up in straight lines without throwing punches or properly defending himself.

Any one of the bad habits mentioned above is enough to get a guy knocked out by Kelly Pavlik. Put all three of them together, in a fight where Pavlik will be looking to make a statement, and Pavlik by brutal knockout seems like a foregone conclusion.

If Sergio could drop those habits in one training camp, he'd have a much better chance. However, dropping those habits in one training camp seems very unlikely. He's been fighting the exact same way ever since the Margarito fight ten years ago.

Pressure and power bother Martinez, and they bother him a lot. He has two losses ten years apart. BUT both losses came against durable, high work rate, pressure fighters. Pavlik is a bigger, stronger, smarter pressure fighter than anything Martinez so much as had nightmares about.
