    From an ESPN article;

"Margarito (37-6, 27 KOs) will return to the ring against Roberto Garcia in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on May 8 in his first fight since two suspect knuckle pads were confiscated moments before the former welterweight champ's knockout loss to Sugar Shane Mosley early last year.
A later test determined the wraps contained elements of plaster, but Petrocelli insists the pads weren't the hardened weapons many have suggested. He also says the ingredients detected by the test -- including sulfur and calcium -- can be found in many substances."

    http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/news/story?id=5058821

First off, let me just say that Margo broke the rules. Whether or not he knew what was in his wraps or not is irrelevant. He's ultimately responible and had to face some sort of punishment. However, is he getting a raw deal here? One could make the argument that HBO, as well as other media outlets, ran with information that wasn't conclusive and had Margo painted as a glove loading villian before his case could be thoroughly investigated. At this point, one could argue that the CSAC had already ****ed up when inspecting his gloves and had to react harshly against Margo in order to deflect blame from themselves.

However, were the inserts hardened, or were they merely padding used with the intent to protect Margos hands? Richardson claims they were hard as bricks, but also claims Margo didn't know what was being put in his gloves(Now how could he not know bricks were being put in his gloves?) One can't dissmiss the idea that Richardson may have exaggerated. Other sources have claimed that the padding was indeed soft and would not have improved Margo's punching power. Now there were trace elements of sulfur and calcium found on the inserts. The keyword is trace. These elements are found in plaster of paris, but wouldn't there be more than trace amounts found if it was indeed plaster of paris? These elements are found in many substances including hand cream. If the wraps were indeed soft, it would make more sense that trace elements of calcium and sulfur would be on them as a result of some sort of cream rather than plaster of paris.

At the end of the day, it looks like all the facts haven't been clearly laid out to the public. The CSAC has clearly ****ed up this whole situation. They don't want anymore heat and may be using Margo as a scapegoat. Other commissions don't want to touch this as it would be a P.R nightmare for them.

His liscense was revoked without solid facts or good reason being given. It's been over a year since his liscense has been revoked and no one seems to even be entertaining the idea of re liscensing Margo. There have been no conditions that Margo has been asked to follow in order to possibly get his liscense back.

Given that HBO and even writers such as Respected Columnist Dan Rafael have done their best to convince everyone that Margo is a sadistic cheater, the public will never look at this case from an objective viewpoint. In my book, fair is fair. It looks like Margo has not gotten a fair shake from the American State Athletic Commissions or the American media. The real crime in this situation may hve been committed against Margo; the villian may actually be the victim.:think

    Wasn't in the room.

Based upon the news that's come out of the case, Margarito was complicit in the type of cheating that really, really hurts fighters. **** him. If he's getting a raw deal, it's nothing he doesn't deserve.

But what if he's simply guilting of putting extra padding in his gloves designed to protect his hands? That's cheating, but that wouldn't put other fighters at any additional risk. If that's the case, is that the type of action that warrants basically a lifetime ban? Now if the wraps were hardened and designed to increase his ability to inflict damage, that's another story. We really don't know though. No one from the CSAC has come out and said, to my knowledge, that the wraps were hard and were being used for the purpose of inflicting more damange on the opponent.

Hand cream? Was he getting a hand massage earlier in the day? Come on, now they are reaching. Who puts on hand cream before a major fight?

Yeah, IF he's getting that raw deal, that's unlucky, but **** him. You can't do that. What are the chances that it was inoccent? Not high, not for me, but it doesn't really matter, if you make a mistake that bad you are going to get shat upon.

As an aside, what type of hardened protection on his hands isn't going to provide some sort of offensive advantage?

I don't know what really went on but I do know that the likes of Jim Lampley, Dan Rafael, and even Steve Bunce had no right to go on National Television condemning Margarito of knowing loading his gloves with cement. There seems to be no perspective on what was really the inadequacy with the hand wrapping. Some people seem to think he had knuckle dusters on. In any event, Antonio was hung out to dry even though the evidence presented was far from conclusive.

Why would the CSAC confess to any screw up especially overlooking this? It would damage their reputation much worse than a fighter. Incompetance of a major commissioin is pretty bad. (Not sure if I spelled that word correctly due to rushing out to go to work).

    Dammit!!!!

I had enough of the Margarita bashing....just stop now!!!

He did his time and as far as I'm concerned he can continue to do more time....even a life-time ban would suffice for that cheating bastart.

Margarita can go suck a Fat one and so can his apologist!!!!!!!

I love the way Margarito fights... but he put fighters' lives in danger every time he did stuff like that.

Honestly, he should be banned for life.

If you brought a loaded gun to a paintball match, you think they'd ever let you back on the course?

His lawyer would be better off if he stuck to trying to make one argument rather than two different ones that don't exactly compliment each other.

Do you mean sources other than Margarito's lawyer?

There were plaster in the handwraps. Plaster. As the article pointed out, Margarito's lawyer has pleaded BOTH ignorance and innocence depending upon who he is talking to. Margarito throws devastating punches that cause gruesome injuries inspite of the fact that he looks to be generating no torque below the waist better than 50% of the time. But not against Mosley, who his punches did not impact at all.

The whole thing stinks IMO, but Paul Williams probably hits the nail on the head - you can't convict him where there is no proof. So that rules out convicting him based upon fights other than Sugar. But there is EVIDENCE of wrong-doing in that fight and Margarito has paid for that, rightly. As Williams says, perhaps he should have paid a heavier fine, and whilst I personally wouldn't have objected to seeing him banned forever, Williams is also right that this is how he makes his living.

Bet/hope, he falls flat on his face.

This is what I'm talking about. Plaster was not found in the wraps. There were trace elements of sulfur and calcium found on the wraps. These elements are found in plaster, but they are found in many other substances as well including many lotions and hand creams. Do you know how much sulfur and calcium are in plaster? What if the amounts found on the wraps were much less than is found in plaster? No one has come out and answered these questions. My whole point is that it seems due diligence was not done in this case and that has been punished mainly on public perception rather facts. It also looks like he's been possibly used as a scapegoat to cover the incompetance of the CSAC.
