I'm always interested to get people's takes on these, especially people who know more about boxing than me. So here's my challenge: In brief, direct, simple terms, what are the pros/cons of various fighters? For example: Paul Williams: Pros- Output, endless stamina, chin (yes, CHIN), heart, size advantage Cons- Doesn't fight his size, willingness to trade, sloppy punches, easy to hit Miguel Cotto (the old one, at least): Pros- Jab, body attack, heart, footwork, ring generalship Cons- Cuts easily, badly damaged from Margo, not particularly well-trained Edwin Valero: Pros- Ludicrous power, underrated footwork, tenacity Cons- Open mouth, sloppiness, mental fortitude etc etc I'd be interested in seeing specifically what you guys think of Tim Bradley, Devon Alexander, and, well, pretty much anybody. Have at it.
I'd also add Cotto's vulnerability to the uppercut as a weakness. For his strengths, combination punching. He throws crisp compact combinations.
Manny Pacquiao Strengths: Speed, Power, Footwork and Workrate Weaknesses: Relatively easy to hit. Chin held up high. Needles...
This is NOT allowed to turn into a stupid ****ing Pacquiao/Mayweather argument. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.
Zab Judah Pros: Tremendous speed, good boxing ability and defense (sometimes), heart and power Cons: Low stamina, gets broken down easily and doesnt stayed focused enough But i still like Judah. Mike Tyson Pros: Incredible speed, power, defense, relentless offense, everything a fighter needed Cons: When cus d'amato passed away everything went downhill, no focus (later in his career)
Amir Khan Pros: Speed, stamina, good power, good jab and ring generalship Cons: inexperience to high level fights, suspect chin, Over confidence JMM pros: Counter punching machine, great recuperating power, technicality cons: slow at(140+), slow starter, age, prone to KD's
Did he? I remember in his documentary that he said once cus died he started to lose his focus and disipline. Tyson did good for a while but i think with cus he would of stayed more focused and complete.
Floyd Mayweather Pros: Quick hands and feet, near perfect defensively, solid chin, patience, stamina, ring generalship among best in history. Cons: Tends to be too passive at times; sometimes relies too much on defense, and not enough on offense, puts too much emphasis on being undefeated, and not enough on fighting the best. Roy Jones Pros: Still can get crowd excited when he ACTS like he is about to do something, still has a cool looking, albeit ineffective offensive stance, after being KO'd 3 times, and brutalized twice, still shows he has heart Cons: Fragile chin, doesn't exert himself offensively enough, hasn't adapted to his age like Hopkins, makes too many excuses for loses, not great at adapting to styles
Cus definately died before Tyson won the HW championship. Tyson was a trainwreck. He was destined to get himself into trouble. He avoided it early in his career because he fought so often. Cus would've only delayed the inevitable.
Tyson peaked 2-3 years after Cus died. Tyson was just a prospect when Cus died. If he'd lived I think Tyson would've maintained on top a little while longer, but there was only so much that Cus would've been able to prevent. Tyson was just a headcase. As far as weaknesses for Tyson goes (we all know his strengths), he could lose focus and discipline in terms of moving his head in the latter rounds. He showed vulnerability to the uppercut, as you might expect from a short swarmer. He could be real lazy on the inside. Despite his size and lack of range, he wasn't what you call a real inside fighter. He did his best work at mid range or while coming inside. Once while inside, he lacked the polish of a real skilled inside fighter like a Bowe.
Also, once he stopped using Kevin Rooney as his trainer he stopped using the peekaboo defense and head movement and just starting headhunting and looking for the knockout.
He got lazier with his defense, also with the jab, but was still a good bodypuncher. He absolutely destroyed Ruddock's body.
Mike Tyson went down hill when he got with Don king and left Kevin Rooney. Kevin Rooney continued to train Tyson in Cus's style, he trained a Junior Welter by the name of Ricky Meyers in the same style. I don't know if you can find him on youtube, Ricky Meyers was little tyson minus the power. He was a USA Network headliner.
