Thanx. Did I just dream that I saw and saved those May 1954 rankings? . Ok thats it, i'm walking down to the street to check myself into the Asylum.
The Ring's heavyweight ratings for May 1954 were as follows: (Ratings dated May 20) Champion: Rocky Marciano 1. Ezzard Charles 2. Nino Valdes 3. Don Cockell 4. Jimmy Slade 5. Tommy Jackson 6. Roland La Starza 7. Dan Bucceroni 8. Earl Walls 9. Heinz Neuhaus 10. Tommy Harrison I have nearly all the ratings ever published by The Ring, so if there's anymore you need I can look it up for you :good You might want to send me a PM if I don't reply within a day or two though - I don't spend a lot of time on this forum.
Charles was past his best by then. Outside of Rocky, there really wasn't a lot of dangerous heavyweights on this list, and they say heavyweights are in bad shape today. Outside of Rocky perhaps only 1 or 2 of of the top 10 listed make the ring magazine ratings today at heavy. As Jimmy Cannon aptly put it, Marciano stood out like a rose in a garbage dump. On the plus side, I do think the fans saw many competitive fights! Some of these 50 fights were entertaining.
"perhaps only 1 or 2 of the top 10 listed make the ring magazine ratings today at heavy." Well most of them are dead now, and the others pretty old. I think 1 or 2 is a pretty strong showing.
