I guess the four reaching the half finals would be Mace, Ketchel, Klaus and Flowers. Ketchel and Flowers make the finals. This would be a pick´em.

Because my opinion of Monzon is such that I think his style is predicated around holding physical advantages over his opponents, and just doesn't cut it well enough as an all-round boxer to be a serious contender against the very best bigger men. His style relies on being able to keep the guy on the outisde, get to the punch first, tie him up when he gets in close. His other skills (speed, head movement etc.) are adequate, but largely only exist to complement his main attributes, and I certainly don't think they're good enough for him to adopt the entirely different approach he would have to against bigger men - closing the distance, for instance. I'm not saying he couldn't box bigger guys (you brought up the Mundine fight - Monzon's size/strength was arguably the determining factor in that fight and I don't rate Mundine particularly anyway); I just don't think he's that proven at doing so. That's why he's not winning.

Having said all that, people seem to be including several career Middleweights in this, so he would have a good chance against them. I was under the impression that this was going to be mostly guys that started off at ~160 and then had their greatest successes above the weight. Certainly, against those guys, I don't like his chances very much at all.

 

What do you make out of his fight with Tony Mundine?

 

Monzon should have fought Conteh.That would tell us a lot more about his worth above 160.As it is, it's just guesswork.

 

And why cant he transfer his skills, getting off first, long jab etc.. to fight bigger men?

Out of my tourny hes taller than Marshall, Conn, Lamotta and Fitz

 

Well, you're going to struggle to get off first against taller guys who have longer jabs etc.

Fair enough - like I said, I thought this was purely about monsters who started off at Middleweight and had to move up quite quickly, having most of their success at Light Heavy (guys like Charles, Moore etc.).

 

Mundine makes a shitload of technical mistakes (as per usual) and Monzon punishes him for it with power punching.

 

Sam Langford should be in it.
