Who holds the best win at middle: HOPKINS (vs Tito) or TONEY (vs Nunn)?

ooooo, good question. that's a whole thread of its own but i'll say it's a damn good fight either way

 

The Toney that beat Nunn, would lose to the Hopkins that beat Trinidad in a very close fight in my opinion. Looking at the styles of the two back in that time period, I really don't have a strong pick, I slightly favor Hopkins though...

I think Toney gets underrated from that time period because all people can see these days is a fat Toney fighting far past his best.

 

that is true but i honestly wonder about the middleweight toney. he was too eratic and struggled too much with the weight to have faith in his performance on any given night. who knows what toney shows up? if it's the one who got schooled by tiberi, he might get knocked out

Which is part of the reason I would favor Hopkins, Nunn was getting the better of Toney in my opinion in many of the rounds.

That was a great Toney though.

 

It be a hell of a fight ..Most likely a very dirty one ..I like Toney based on work rate ..Hopkins only out works fighters that can't outwork him ..Taylor out worked him Calzaghe out worked him Jones out worked him so I'd lean toward Lights Out .

 

Hopkins defeating Tito was one of the most dominating upset win in the divisions history. He absolutely owned Tito wearing him down till the KO in the 12th. It was really an amazing performance.
Anybody ever see Hopkins vs Simon Brown? I saw it live at the Taj Mahal
it was one of the most brutal punishings Bhop ever gave besides Tito.

 

I dont know ..Trinidad had that Aura of Invincibility,He was coming up in weight and still destroying everyone that was put in front of him outside of his normal weight class

No one gave Hopkins a chance,no one thought he will prevail

I think B-hops Knockout win over Trinidad was the much Bigger upset

 

No way not even close. Nunn was on top of the world and no one even knew who Toney even was. Hopkins on the other hand was a champion for a long time and a big middleweight.

He toke out Joppy when Hopkins later couldn't and ruined Vargas but he showed vulnerbility in his earlier years by being floored though he came back to finish his opponents. DLH showed he could be beaten but judges didn't give him the rightful decision. Hmm I'm a fan of Nunn, Trinidad, Toney, and Hopkins but I'd have to go with Nunn-Toney because Toney came from behind and caught Nunn with a hellacious left hook and finished him off in a fight he was losing. Hopkins was dominant all the way in the Trinidad fight.

 

Obviously, Toney. Tito, was still very good, but not the same above 147. Hopkins, beat a welterweight.

 

I've seen Hopkins-Brown. That's one of the bravest performances I've ever seen from any fighter. Even when Brown had taken a horrendous beating and was out on his feet, he was still gritting his teeth and trying to return fire.

I agree with you on Hopkins-Tito by the way, it was a clinical execution of the highest order.

Even an out of shape and demotivated Toney still has one of the best chins and defences in the history of boxing.

Look at it this way - it isn't possible that any mw version of Toney could enter the ring in a state anywhere near as bad as he showed up for the rematch with Sam Peter. Toney was ancient, really fat, and pretty much shot in that fight. And yet a 250lbs proven heavyweight powerpuncher still couldn't stop him, despite landing a lot of clean punches.

If Hopkins and Toney fought 100 times, Toney is being stopped zero times.

Toney's win has to be rated much higher, its really not even close. One guy (Nunn) was fighting in his prime weight class, in which he was tried and tested and the other guy Tito was a WW who only had one fight at MW, where he beat a ok fighter called Joppy.
