Rocky Marciano "How I Would Beat Ali"

Agree with that, I'd pick Ali over Marciano but he'd find prime Rock a tougher nut to crack than prime Tyson for example, Marciano was never discouraged like Tyson was several times, and I'm a massive Tyson fan.

I'd pick Ali to win on points but I reckon Rock would have plenty of moments in this fight. I'd pick Marciano over Frazier for sure, and we all saw what problems a past prime Ali had with that guy. Prime Rock V prime Ali is a very interesting fight.

I give Marciano more than 20 percent at upsetting Ali.

The 20 percenters belong to the Folly's or Williams, not to other legend in the ring imo.

 

Yes, I agree Marciano would've busted up Frazier, and Norton as well. Not sure about Foreman, though. Physical differences aside, Rocky would have immense difficulty just getting close enough. You know how Big George thrived on bullying smaller opponents, constantly shoving them. But- if Marciano managed to get inside and pounded everything in sight, he just might wear Foreman down. A possible scenario, although not likely.

 

Ali is better P4P in every way except punching power, bigger, and just a bad stylistic match-up for Rocky. Given how much Rocky struggled, even in his best performances, against guys nowhere close to Ali's league, I see no reason to give him that great a chance against him. Rocky vs 100% versions of Charles and Walcott are 50-50 fights to me, and Ali is much more difficult H2H than either of them.

 

Charles may have been nowhere 100% when he fought Marciano, but Walcott was damm near 100% that night. I can't see him putting up a better performance than that night in 1952(I am Walcotts biggest supporter too). Maybe only The Walcott of Louis I, but that is a big Maybe.

You say every matchup with rocky is a bad stylistic mach-up for him. Why don't you just take his style for what it is...a nightmare for any man that ever gets in the ring with him. Win or Lose, it will not be an easy nights work.

I know your a big Jack Dempsey fan. For a man on film who was nearly knocked out by a clumsy crude brawler , lost 19 out of 20 rounds to a light-heavyweight, was stunned badly by a 170lber, and needed a shot in the balls to beat a contender who battered him for 6 rounds...you certainly view "Struggling" differently when it comes to dempsey. Sure Dempsey looks great on film battering big oafs or doing cute bob and weaves in a sparring session...but Rocky looks great too when you throw him in with the laynes and matthews. Charles, Walcott..These guys could make anyone struggle with them. Tunney, Sharkey made Dempsey struggle big time.

 

Rocky would give anyone a tough time, but I don't pick him to beat many greats, he just doesn't impress me H2H. Walcott wouldn't need to be much better at all to have won that fight with Rocky, and I do not think that was at his very best. Had he been a bit younger, and still put up the same kind of performance, I think he stands a 50/50 chance of winning a Dec. I don't know what Dempsey has to do with this discussion. I feel he looks far more skilled and dangerous than Rocky in their best filmed performances. Rocky was hurt by Tiger Ted Lowry, was Lowry a better puncher than Carpentier? Rocky did not have an unbreakable chin, he was not unmovable in the ring, he did not have great defense, and he wasn't as big a one-punch bomber as many make him out to be. All of these points are evidenced on film and in fight reports. Criticize Dempsey all you want, but you can find plenty to criticize Marciano for, too. Not so much in how his career was managed, he fought everyone he should have, but he wasn't the world-beater you make him out to be. If you watch him and read about him without bias that is plain to be seen.

 

Did you see Rocky get hurt by Lowry? or are you just falling into the trap of sensationalism by journalists? Without film, we have no idea how "hurt" Marciano was against Lowry. We do know from our own two eyes, that Carpentier put Dempsey on jelly legs with one right hand.

 

Jelly legs? That's a bit of an exaggeration. Dempsey was backed up for a couple of seconds before he goes right back to trying to work on the inside. Carpentier lands some hard follow up punches that have no effect. It was also a three punch combination rather than one right hand. If Marciano was hurt at all by Lowry, he was about as hurt as Dempsey against Carpentier.

 

More info the the filiming of this movie? Did Ali and Marciano spar or something on set?

 

Newspaper accounts are sensationalist when reporting on the shortcomings of Rocky ? What was their motive ?

 

rocky set a great example in front of a camera and with his actions. However nobody is perfect and there is evidence rocky could be overly suspicious, highly strung and cheap. Micky duff was grabbed by the lapels of his jacket and threatened by rocky over a mix up with his expenses during a promotional trip to London.

according to the late reg guteridge rocky would delibratly turn up for tv interviews in old clothes so he would be given new ones. Reg would get in trouble for costing the tv people more money to tog him out. on the same ocasion rocky also "borrowed" a top tv guys rain mack and did not return it. although reg admired rocky the fighter i felt he wasnt so fond of him as other world champions he met. another story reg told about rocky was when a buxom bimbo came over to marciano and started gushing about how marciano was in "somebody up there likes me" reg was elbowed prety hard by rocky when he tried to explain she was mistaken. reg said rocky whispered out the side of his mouth "dont tell her for chists sakes reg!"

I understand his short commings, but all in all he's still one of the best out of boxers. I know he was extremely cheap and hardly ever paid for anything when he went out, and I also know that he wasn't shy with women after his boxing days. Doesn't make him a bad person. He reportedly never refused a kid's autograph, and he was never disrespectful. You can his respect was genuine too, unlike a lot of the fighters (namely Foreman) who will say whatever makes people happy.
