Rigondeaux splitting with Roach according to this and not fighting at the weekend. No mention of Gary Hyde either, is he still involved with Rigondeaux?
I'm a huge Rogan fan but to be honest he isn't doing himself any favours whinging on about Sexton. He needs to forget about it and move on especially if as he says he's not interested in returning to the British scene and wants to try his luck at world level.
I think martin might be a bit confused himself first he says he wants a tune up fight coleman barret then monte barrett then john ruiz and then haye and then he says he'd fight either klitschko and then he says he'll fight the winner of harrison sprott?? i think he is just beginning to name any heavyweights name he can remember??
This content is protected Matthew Macklin has been forced to rest up due to an unexpected nose injury. By Thomas Myler Thursday April 08 2010 You would not be too far wrong if you felt that Matthew Macklin is one of Ireland's unluckiest boxers. With an impressive run of nine wins since being surprisingly knocked out by Jamie Moore in a British light middleweight title fight in 2006, 'Mack the Knife' was in line for a world title fight with American Kelly Pavlik. First, though, he was scheduled to defend his European title against Dmitry Pirog in Birmingham on April 16. The unbeaten if untested Russian pulled out with injury and an Armenian southpaw, Khoren Gevor, came in as a sub. Then Gevor was reported as doubtful with an injury and it looked as if the title defence might be cancelled. Meanwhile Macklin, who was training in the famous Wild Card gym in Los Angeles under one of America's foremost coaches, Freddie Roach, sustained a nose injury in training and his European defence was put off indefinitely. Macklin has now relinquished the European belt to concentrate on the world title scene, although he is holding on to the Irish middleweight title. He is now back home in Birmingham, where he was born of Irish parents, and taking things easy until the nose injury clears up before he can even spar again. "I'm just gutted," Macklin said yesterday. "I had been waiting six months to put my title on the line, as a win would have strengthened my world title claims but there was no point in hanging on to the title." Roach, explaining how the injury happened, said: "Matthew was sparring with a couple of Russian guys, two brothers, when he walked into a punch that he should have avoided. But there you go. These things happen and hopefully he will be back sparring soon. I should think he will be back in Los Angeles probably around the end of April. "I like Matthew," says Roach. "He's a good kid with lots of ability. I've had some good times times working with the likes of good Irish fighters like Steve Collins, Bernard Dunne and Wayne McCullough so hopefully I can have the same success with Matthew too. Meanwhile, the European title situation will be clarified in London tomorrow when the unbeaten British and Commonwealth champion Darren Barker touches gloves with French southpaw Affif Belghecham, who gave Andy Lee some uncomfortable moments last November before losing the decision. SHORT JABS PRO boxing returns to Dublin at the City West Hotel on May 23 when Anthony Fitzgerald defends his Irish supermiddleweight title against old rival Robbie Long. The event promoters are former Irish amateur great Phil Sutcliffe and Cork businessman Don O'Leary. Elsewhere, the Irish Boys' and Girls' Championships continue today, tomorrow and Saturday at the National Stadium in Dublin. - Thomas Myler Irish Independent
By all accounts Hyde is still with him and they are ready to sign with Top Rank.. Podge or Paddy would know more id say...
A bit with the Mirror lads.. good to see them showing an interest in a wide range of irish boxing. Jonny Stapleton Limerick’s Willie Casey is hoping to upset the apple cart on a unique boxing card that honours Irish writer George Bernard Shaw in Canada tonight. The up and coming featherweight faces a tough test against undefeated Canadian super bantamweight champion Tyson Cave (10-0) on a show that will also see Dundalk man Michael Kelly take on Buzz Grant. ‘Big Bang’ Casey’s (4-0) admits challenging Canada’s golden boy on his home patch is a risk at this early stage in his career but believes a scalp could bring massive rewards. Despite having only fought four times as a pro the straight talking puncher, who had to drop to super bantamweight to take the fight, is confident going into the Toronto hosted clash. In fact Casey claims the stylish Cave should be the one that is worried prior to the bout. “Boxing is always a risk. It doesn’t matter if you are entering the ring against a world champion or fighter with 20 losses. One punch can see you loose. I will fight any man and I am looking at this as a great experience rather than a risk. Granted it could be hard to beat him on his home patch. He is 10-0 and the Canadian champion but you have to meet good fighters at some stage in your career. Why not now?” is Big Bang’s theory. “Taking this fight proves we are not hanging around and we are eager to get on. He is likely to be ranked higher than me so a win will give me the chance to leap frog him and push me on. I haven’t seen much of him to be honest. I know he is a bit of a Prince Naz want to be and I will be ready for what ever he throws at me. He is in for a big fright when he sees the shape I am in and feels how strong I am. He should be very worried,” Casey explained to the Irish Mirror.
Best of luck to Casey. He's fairly limited in the skills department but he can really whallop with his fists. If this Canadian is fighting with his hands down and being cocky I'm sure Casey will be able to land a few on him and hurt him. Good fight for the lad, I really hope he wins. I have a huge amount of respect for him.
I think Steve W was saying that they are targeting a knock out win! have to say the lad is a lovely bloke
Yeah a stoppage win should be on the cards here hopefully two with Kelly looking abit too good for his opponent aswell.Good luck guys,
Lindsay told me he is hoping to find out in the next week or so. Also I believe the McCloskey announcement will finally be made in the next couple of weeks. You could see Lindsay and McCloskey both on in June. Given both's promotional ties they wont be on the same card. So that is three before the summer break. If all that comes off I dont think any of us are in a position to complain! Also the second half of the year should see Rogie back as well, so hopefully plenty going on.
