Well, in all seriousness, I do give Vitali the benefit of the doubt overall, even if I say "quit like a bum". I do so only because he's being compared to the GREAT fighters, so I adopt a high standard for all his fights. Same with Liston (in the 1st Ali fight).

Duran I feel was one of the worst quit-jobs ever. I'm not convinced there was anything really physically wrong with him to justify it.

Yes, it depends where we draw the line on individual cases.
I dont want to get it wrong and rally on someone who was genuinely in danger or seriously handicapped by an injury.

    Yeah.
Referees should do something about that.

The guys has a PHD like you keep saying, so he has to be a smart man, correct? Certainly he was smart enough to realize he only had two rounds left and was in there with one of, if not, the weakest puncher in the division at the time, so why not give it a try? The guys 6'7, a straight right works perfectly on a southpaw, why not go out and try and throw straight rights and move for two more rounds, 6 minutes? Certainly he was bright enough to run that scenario through his PHD mind????:|

Some nice discussions here. For those of you who keep bringing up Marciano, how is that of relevance to this thread? Vitali isn't half the fighter or champion Marciano was, and will never be so. The End.

    1. Yes I have, I take it you haven't been to a university, not every graduate is particularly smart

    2. Yes I have, well sparring and training but essentially the same. I've had rotator cuff injuries on both shoulders.

    3. No I've just met plenty of idiots who've graduated though

    4. Yes I have, but in essence it gives me knowledge on that 1 particular subject or series of subjects I study, it doesnt mean I know everything.

Neither does it give Vitali mystical powers to tell he could do long term damage because his shoulder hurts. For 1 a rotator tear wont do long term damage anyway and 2 its already torn the damage is done already.

    5. Don't get upset and what 'proof' are you blabbering on about?

Strange one this - very strange - all I can really say about it is - its one of the following

    1. a genuine injury which he couldn't fight anymore with because of bigtime pain that he was doing well to conceal - because I think he is very much braver and stronger than your average person - like me for instance? haha

    2. a genuine injury he didn't want to fight on with for fear of making it a lot worse - he is a doctor after all apparently so maybe he was thinking like a doctor - don't make it worse and jepordise your future training and fights etc??

    3. a case of him suddenly deciding he didn't want anymore on the night maybe Byrd hurt him with a shot that we didn't notice and maybe he was overtrained or something and completely drained and didn't one to get humiliated in the last couple of rounds - no matter what Larry Merchant was declaring Klit was backing off from Byrd and was gettingknocked back at times from shots - he looked like he didn't like it when Byrd was tagging him?? I mean Byrd is a relatively light puncher but I don't know (really) what it was like taking his shots but Klit did look uncomfortable on one or two occassions.

    4. the controversial one - maybe some ukraine or german gangsters got to Klit and let him know there was big money down on Byrd for the longshot upset - with a cut going to Vit aswell as a rematch ?? haha

who really knows for sure what was going on but Vit is only human i guess - but for me he proved himself one of the toughest with his battle against an admittedly old and decidedly out of shape Lewis - how he took some of Lewis' massive uppercuts without really wobbling I'll never know - can't really say anything bad about the guy personally because he just comes across as a very decent person - so I'll go with no.2 because i think maybe his inner doctor was saying don't damage it too badly if you want to further extend your career and maybe he was thinking a i get out now it might heal quicker and i can get back to fighting quicker - who knows?? - one thing though Byrd was doing well in there with him - he was certainly the better fighter - but Klits size gave him enough of an upper hand

"For those of you who keep bringing up Marciano, how is that of relevance to this thread?"

I was wondering that reading through the posts. Why is Marciano such a big part of this discussion? I would have thought that if any old champion were brought up, it would have been Liston because of his retiring on his stool in the first Ali fight.

    vitali quit. get over it.

if he had heart he would have finished with one hand but he didn't.

everything he's done afterwards deserves respect and if he didn't recieve so much flak then he maybe wouldn't have rumbled with lennox like he did. maybe it helped more than is given credit.

This old news Vitali has more than proved himself as a fighter since this fight.

Well...the Klitschko - Byrd fight certainly has to be taken into consideration when evaluating the career of Vitali Klitschko...that's for sure.
