I was trolling 4chan /sp/ (not /b/...so chill) and one anon brought up some interesting takes on the sports (mainly mma)....I thought i would share, as I was intrigued enough to read the whole damn thing:

"MMA, mixed martial arts, embodied in the UFC, is the latest fad, but as martial arts go, it’s a joke. What exactly are you training for? Getting in a fight at the beach? What else corresponds to the MMA conditions of no clothes but shorts, no obstacles, and a soft flat ground? As a sport, fine, but don’t tell me it’s a martial art.
And as a sport, MMA just represents the devolution of boxing to a more primitive and barbaric condition. In real boxing, if you get knocked into state of semi-consciousness, indicated by falling down, the other fellow has to let you recover. In MMA, you get to jump on your fallen opponent, beating his helpless and undefended semi-conscious face until the referee pushes you off of him. In real boxing, if you start to bleed, the fight is stopped until you stop the bleeding, or the fight is called off if the cut is severe. In MMA we get the spectacle of blood soaked men wrestling each other, covering themselves and the floor with their blood. Disgusting and barbaric.
The fact is, most MMA fights are just boxing, either standing or on the ground. Basic wrestling techniques are utilized to take someone down in order to “ground and pound” them, in other words, boxing with the “standing-only” rule thrown out.

In fact, the techniques and strategies of MMA are counterproductive when it comes to real fighting. The list of MMA rules are a list of the things you SHOULD actually do in a fight! Eye gouging, head butting, small joint locks, hair pulling, biting, kicking a man when he’s down: that is the stuff that actually works. Hence, it is made illegal, because it is too dangerous to use in a sport. Even the spectacularly effective throwing techniques of Greco-roman wrestling and judo are rendered moot in MMA, because of the soft springy floor.
Guess what, in the real world, should you end up in a physical confrontation, here is your most effective strategy: Throw your enemy down (probably using his clothes), slamming him with maximum force into the hard ground (probably concrete, tile, or hard wood), then kick and stomp his head while he is down (with your boot-covered foot).
    That, my friends, is fighting.
The oft-repeated forumula, that MMA “combined the best of all martial arts”, that is joke. MMA is contradiction in terms, since it is NOT a martial art, although it is a sport that mixed some techniques from previously separate sports. The fact is, the first few UFC competitions changed everything, by firmly establishing that ju-jitsu style submission techniques dominated the striking-only arts.
Early MMA also proved that the striking arts are MOST effective at breaking hands, not winning fights. Countless fighters ended tournaments with broken hands, broken while hitting their opponents’ heads. The gloves they use now are to advantage those boxing techniques. In short, boxing needs multiple subsidies to survive in a competitive environment, in the form of gloves, sprung floors, and no clothes.
Contemporary MMA is the worst of all worlds: savage, barbaric, and martially lame. The fact that so many fan-bots mindlessly repeat its supposed advantages is proof only of general stupidity.
If you want a real martial art, that also combines the effectiveness of sparring, study judo. And know that in a real fight, after you off-balance and throw your enemy with your judo technique, you finish the fight by stomping and kicking the crap out of him. Calming someone down with sweet arm/wrist breaker is also your option. Today’s ju-jitsu offers similar advantages. Avoid any so-called martial training that doesn’t involve clothes, or that is overly sport oriented. Even judo avoids too many effective techniques (such as hands to the face and wrist locks) because they are dangerous in sport.
The main advantage of sport is that the full speed sparring toughens your body into combat readiness. The main disadvantage is that you are regularly in pain and/or have injuries, and don’t drill the really effective stuff. The traditional, non-sport forms of ju-jutsu have the advantage of keeping alive the truly effective stuff, in a safer training environment, with the disadvantage of not honing your combat fitness and toughness to the highest degree."

Just something to think about...I personally can watch both sports, but in all honesty, there are only a handfull, if that, of fighters that I have any respect for in mma.

Excellent points a good post. I like the mention of separate sports and martial arts in one. And how they adjust to even the playing field. I used to really like MMA but not anymore

While that may well all be true - When you have the boxing business and brand Vs the UFC and associates - I'm afraid UFC has boxing in a rear naked choke.

This weekend you have the true middle and lightweight champs fighting on the same card for the one title at each respective weight. You will know who the best light and middles are this weekend, two weeks after we know who the best welter is and a clear challenger for the best HW in their sport too.

Furthermore, ESPN covered it in a special 45 minute show all about the sport.

And you can buy the St Pierre Hardy fight in full HD dvd in a couple of weeks, along with any other card and you don't have to rely on a dodgy VCR boot or someone pirating fights for a living to provide you with a nice package including weigh ins, pre and post match analysis.

Whereas in boxing you have Sulaiman wanting to strip Devon Alexander because he wants to fight the best at 140 pounds - Tim Bradley - Where the WBC has these 10 as the ten best rated fighters at 140 -

    1. Ionut Dan Ion
    2. Ajose Olusegun
    3. Ali Chebah
    4. Cesar Cuenca
    5. Prawet Singwangcha
    6. Paul McCloskey
    7. Josesito Lopez
    8. Mike Alvarado
    9. Juan Diaz
    10. Jose Miguel Cotto

Boxing is my favourite sport - But for whatever painfully obvious differences between the sports there are - Lets' just face up to the fact that UFC and the sport of MMA is here to stay and as fans, hopefully respond in a way that makes our sport more organised - Like say - consistent drug testing regimens, monitoring of official duties like hand wraps.

Going to the ground in a street fight is great if you KNOW its a one on one - Too bad if you're on the ground trying to turn someone into a pretzel and their mate comes over and soccerball kicks your head off.

UFC was awesome in their first 10 outings, then they turned into this single style mix.

They were great when they were matching up all the styles of the world against each other.

    Karate vs boxer
    wrestler vs jui jitsu
    kick boxer vs muy thai

    Ha ha - Luke - You're a card mate.

I do like when you see the styles come through a bit more - Maia's BJJ, Karo's Judo, Machida's karate - Not so much the whole Hughes inspired lay and pray era - But still.

I agree it was created for the purpose to see what was the best. And you saw the best from each and each style in its purest form not these jack of all trades master of none fighters

You should really watch the sport before making sweeping statements like that.

There's dozens examples of black belts in many martial arts applying their styles in an MMA context mate.

I used to watch them all for the longest time but I gave up on it. Not as exciting. Liked the first couple events when it was more of an experiment

I get that - Because I kind of lost interest at around UFC 20 up til I guess Liddell started KOing people and the sport became less about wrestling and holding people on the mat.

I think it's still evolving - But I appreciate the ground fighting more now.

    It certainly is one prospective.

I'd point out a few errors in his thinking.

Boxing isn't stopped when someone starts bleeding.

In a street fight to the death his theory may apply. You can't, even in a street fight, throw someone to the ground and start stomping their head. You'll end up in jail for attempted murder.
Yes UFC/MMA has rules, it has to. Is it the most realistic fight to the death, of course not.
Maybe he has a military background where head stomping the enemy was and maybe still is acceptable. We trained the head stomp in basic training, back in the day. What was that cadence.. Boots up side the head drill sergeant, kick them till their dead drill sergeant.

Someone always has or gets a weapon in a street fight. Knowing Judo hip tosses is great unless he has a .22...

    thread says "MMA"
but everyone in thread refers to as UFC
UFC is the biggest production in the MMA world apparently...they market tons of tshirts, videos, merchandise ect.... they are a division of MMA....which boxing is boxing...and there is no divisions per say...with the exception of the WBA and WBC seemingly ranking the same fighters over and over.... a fighter in the WBC may be ranked 2...but IBF he may be 15th
UFC is not much different than pro wrestl;ing....they have their own following, own rules, same recycled guys fighting each....

Dont watch it much any more. White trash dominated now. I loved the first UFC's I got to see what I practiced beating the other styles with ease. And you know what I was the only one who liked it. All the white trash that cheers the take down today were booing Royce and Shamrock in the first UFC.
