Local radio interview by jsimps and mickeyc was streamed with the sparring partners. They said Kelly has learned to take the left away. Kelly said he didn't see Sergio's right hook as anything special on the "Through the Ropes" interview.

“You obviously don’t go through the amateurs with just power punches,” said Pavlik, a former national amateur champion who qualified for the Olympic trials before turning pro. “I obviously showed I had hand speed, especially in the division I boxed in.”

I said "pad work like that". Pad work is obviously great, but when it's a set routine, what can a boxer learn? They can't learn anything because it's a routine. They aren't getting off relevant combinations, it's just for show, like most speed bag work is.

Margarito was out on his feet and the ropes were keeping him up. That was not a mercy stoppage.

And which was the punch which hurt him? He was taking Mosley's right hands fine. He didn't get hurt during the fight until that leaping left hook. That was the first time he was truly hurt because he didn't expect the shot.

I've watched the Martinez video a few times now to make sure I got it right.

The short version of Sergio's plan is; avoid the right hand, and take Pavlik out early.

Here's what happens when you try to take KP out early.

A set routine to learn to react to a specific situation in a fight. That is why Mayweather touches his side to simulate a specific punch to start the routine. If this is for show they better change his name for Rigondeaux to Rigormortise cuz he ain't being very showy.

Exactly, look how ineffective that was. Why try and teach him that? If the final combination is jab, right hook, left hook, right hook body, left hook, right upper, left upper body, why not just start with the jab and then right hook? Then add the left and so on.

It was pointless teaching him that because he was learning nothing and the combination was highly ineffective in a real fight.

There's a way to work the pads which is what you don't see. There's a reason Mayweather and his uncle worked the pads like that at the press conferences, because it looks so impressive, but it's not really practical. The practical pad work is done behind closed doors.

Reaction and punch rhythm. They might not show their best to the public, but they don't work out useless routines for public consumption. Obviously he was just learning this one for the first time.

taylor may have shot his load in the second but he hit kelly with about everything but the ringpost. i know you arent a huge pavlik fan but putting the reason for the win wholly on taylor and not giving any credit to kelly for showing the heart he did isnt exactly fair. he weathered everything taylor had and then knocked him out.

Yep. Hit Kelly with everything he had. Kelly went down, got right back up and walked to the neutral corner for the count and survived the round. How many people are calling Martinez by KO again? :-(

could be a tough fight for pavlik. if martinez can get his combinations going, pavlik will have trouble coping with that. what i will say though is martinez does leave his defense oen at times and you don't want to get hit often by pavlik. should be a cracking fight.
