Irish Boxing

Thought Barker was dreadful last night. Looked great for a few rounds but does a lot of arm punching and doesn't seem to plant his feet. The tank seemed to empty not long after half way. If Belgecham had a dig he would have had him out of there. What a tough little guy he is though to take the body shots he did early and still keep coming right up until the final bell.

On that performance you would have to say that Macklin would walk through Barker and gave him a real hiding. Lee I'm not so sure but I'd still pick him to win, possibly by late stoppage. In fact when you comare the two fights you'd have to say that Lee's win over Belgecham looks quite impressive now. For me Lee easily dominated the first 8, probably drew the 9th but I don't even think the last round was as bad as a lot of people were making out, Lee was tiring but never really hurt. If you were watching Sky last night and hadn't seen the Lee fight you'd have got the impression that he had a life and death struggle with Belgecham.

A lot of people forget how easily Lee beat Barker in the amateurs. In fact I think Paul McCloskey beat Barker as well in the amateur.

 

Anyone know what the latest is with Brian Magee? Someone mentioned that there was something in the Newsletter about him being in nowhere land again. How come that he wins the British and European titles and both wins seem to stall his career!

There was talk of him defending against Paul Smith but that seems to have gone quiet now.

I know it's a pipe dream because of the various promotional camps and everything but can you imagine Magee and McCloskey defending their European titles, Lindsay challenging for the European and Rogan's comeback all on one big Odyssey bill (and of course not forgetting an appearance by the Jackal!)

 

Why not try and organise a little ESB campaign along the lines of bring back Bunce to get more Irish pro boxing news on the rte website. In fact while we're at it why not lobby rte about showing more pro boxing in general. Apparently they are happy with the viewing figures so why not demand that they show more??

We've only had one show so far this year, I know there is supposed to be a Lee show coming up but surely there is enough of a market for a monthly show now or even a regular magazine programme like they do with monday night soccer and the rugby one.

You have to break a few eggs to make an omlette. People are now talking about Farrell, Conlan and Wilton all getting it on for the Irish title.

 

A simple email and facebook campaign might do the trick, a steady flow of email looking for more boxing. Remember we're all licence payers (or at least are supposed to be!) so we're well within our rights to demand it. Maybe Cormac and the guys at irishboxing.com could get behind it??

There are plenty good fights out there for our fighters at irish title, british, european and world level and with rte's backing we could get to see a lot more of them I think. We just need to get an email address for whoever makes the decisions there. Viva la revolution!

well if you are going to slag a kid off for wanting a fight the a move like that is shadey to say the least - and having a pop at Farrell's Irishness is a little bit of a low blow as well imo!

Taylor, Moylette and Molloy on course

Ireland's senior and youth world champions Katie Taylor, Ray Moylette and Gary Molloy will all box for places in their respective finals at the Prime Ministry Tournament in Ankara, Turkey, following quarter-final wins on Friday.

European Youth champion Jason Quigley is out of the tournament following a 4-1 quarter-final reversal to Turkey's 2008 Olympian Adam Kelicci.

Molloy got Ireland off to a positive start with a 7-2 victory over Alexander Tiscan of Moldova on Friday. The Moate club-man will now meet England's Khalid Yafai in Saturday's flyweight decider.

Moylette followed that up with a 2-0 victory over Turkey's Onur Sipal to set up a semi-final clash with John Joe Joyce's great rival Gyula Kate of Hungary, who Joyce beat at the 2008 Olympics.

Taylor, meanwhile, took her tally to 29 points scored and just two conceded in three bouts with a 7-0 decision over Bulgaria's Demista Dliseeva.

The Bray woman will face Irkan Melek of Turkey on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Irish head-coach Billy Walsh has confirmed that Con Sheehan has broken the thumb in his left hand.

The Clonmel heavyweight, the current EU and Irish champion, sustained the injury in Wednesday's win over Yong Wang of China.

Its called hypocrisy. You cant have a pop at a guy "for calling out his fighter" and then pull a stunt like that.

Now I dont mind which way they have it but you cant have it both ways.
