This match was discussed after Jimmy Braddock failed to defend his title against Max Schmeling, but obviously it never came off.

Had it come off it would undoubtedly have been an ideologicaly volatile match.

    Who would have taken it?

I would lean towards Schmeling by decision in this...But it could feasibly have gone either way. Schmeling really seemed to struggle with baer's power prior to this, but don't believe that farr would present that same problem for him...and don't think farr would outbox him by a wide margin. This is really by my estimation a coin flip fight, but if forced to, I would lean towards Max.

i agree it would be close.farr was the most durable heavy of the day and could move well behind his jab.max was the more potent hitter but wouldn't have enough to put farr over.
toss a coin for the winner

Max by dec, this nearly came to the UK ,but Max sensibly wanted the Champ ,as did Tommy, Braddock ,via Joe Gould opted for the sweetheart deal whereby they got 10% of Mike Jacobs promotions of Louis as Champ.

I don´t think this is 50/50. Farr was durable, so this would go over the distance but I like Schmeling´s counters and harder punches to win it for him. Close but clear. Farr would be game and would pose some problems but in the end it wouldn´t be enough.

Baer´s power was something else to what Farr had and even in his best performance the fight was about even up to the stoppage.

I have studdied farr in some detail and have come to the conclusion that as he was an old booth fighter he knew how to make a fight close with just about anyone. even when outclassed Farr knew how hard to fight to keep things even. He was expert at neutralising taktics smothering behind those big shoulders. It was never enough to beat the good ones and so it would be here. Max had the class.

Farr was as tough as teak and might just have been champion if he had come allong in the period between Gene Tunney and Joe Louis. I tend to agree however that Max probably had the right stylistic tools to beat him particularly his counterpunching.

how did the deal work? was it agreed that louis gave 10% of any title fights he would be involved in to braddock or was it 10% for the next 10 years?

It wasn't 10% of Louis's purses in was 10% of the gate receipts paid to Jacobs. Louis's purses were unafected. Jacobs found a way to wriggle out of it after four years, but it was still a lucrative deal for Braddock. It is amazing that he still trid to win the fight.

I have to go with Schmeling in a very interesting and close matchup.

I think it would have been a troublesome match for Max, but I think Schemeling would have pulled off a win with many precise counters.

Farr was 1st rated in the top 10 back in July of 1937, after he beat Max Baer on April 15th of that year. He was rated #4, behind SChmeling, Louis and Alberto Lovell. The next month he lost a spot to Bob Pastor who jumped from 8th to 3rd. At the time he fought Baer, Baer wasn't rated at all, so I will have to go with Schmeling. I just wonder why they picked Farr to go against Schmeling and not some other contender. After all, Farr just became a contender just 2 months before Louis beat Braddock.

The deal ran allmost its full course until Jacobs in poor health stopped payments and it went to attorneys to sort out.
The deal was for 10% of Jacobs promotions of the title ,[the 20th Century Sporting Club ] ,but he probably skimmed it off of Joe's end, knowing Mike.
