Galento's was nice. Sir Henry had a good one. Norton's wasn't bad. When they used the left hook it was good... W. Klitschko, Foreman (in the 70's he threw them a little more), Lewis, Bowe.
Shavers is so famous for his right his dynamite left hook gets forgotten ... look at the shot he dropped Lle with and almost stopped him ... it was terrific ...
For pure one-punch power? Tyson Morrison Tua Ruddock Liston 1-punch power is overrated though. I think Frazier, Dempsey and Louis were better with the left hook than any of those 5 guys. I'd rather take 1 hook from Liston than 3 from Joe Louis in the same period of time
But there are times when he just landed a left, and it dropped someone or ended the fight right there. So you can judge it. I agree Cooney has a v powerful left hook, but is it in the top 5 for KO punches? Hmm, not sure. I'd have him top 10 though. Next time ask for a top 10 not a top 5
There were many Great left hookers. Dempsey, Frazier, Tua, Cooney, Morrison, Tyson, Liston, Louis, Foreman and others. What I can not understand is that some of you rate Marciano's left hook with these guys. Back in 1963, a Boxing Mag. ran an article on all the Heavyweight Champions. They rated them on Power, Chin, Footwork, Jab, Hook, Right & Stamina. They had Rocky with a BEST rating in Power, Chin & Right, he got a fair rating in Jab and a Poor rating in both Footwork & Hook. I also talked to many top boxing historians and experts, and many rate Rocky's right as one of the best, BUT none of them rate Rocky's hook as that good. I know he KO'ed a few with the hook but he really didn't have the hook that were in the class with the others I listed above.
I said he did KO some BUT his right was the punch he was noted for. Ali floored Oscar with a left hook, and Oscar had a very good chin, and you don't rate his as an all-time great. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96MYTogoXLc[/ame]
All I am saying is that of all the historians and boxing experts I know, and I know almost all of them, none of them rated Rocky's left hook as that good BUT on this site some of you rated it as one of the Greatest.
George Foreman had a very hard left hook.....Even though the opponent wasn't the most durable or the best, the single left hook that Foreman flattened Adilson Rodriguez with was a thing of beauty.
Williams had a good left hook but other than stopping Ernie Terrell in 7 rounds I can't think of any other top fighter that he hurt with it. He fought Eddie Machen to a draw and lost a split-decision to Terrell in their rematch... but I can't think of any other top fighters that he faced and did not lose to. Sure, he beat some name guys like Wayne Bethea, Billy Daniels, Ernie Cab, and Terry Daniels but these guys were far from top fighters. 6'3" with an 80" reach and 210-215Lbs. He had good power but his chin was far from great. He was stopped by Satterfield KO3, Liston KO3 and KO2, Ali KO3, Al Jones KO8, Mac Foster KO5 and KO3, and Alvin Lewis KO4. He was decisioned by Sylvester Jones L4, Terrell L10, Bob Cleroux L10, Jack O'Halloran L10, and George Chuvalo L10. Some think he would have beat Patterson and Johansson though!!!
Liston and Terrel are the only people to beat a prime Williams. Getting shot by a cop, losing 60 pounds, and almost dying as a result isn't exactly great for your career which is the reason he lost to the guys you listed.
I know all about it... still he beat very few top fighters. Too many people judge him on "what could have been" instead of "what actually was".
