Regardless of what you think of either fighter, De La Hoya seemed to be getting good work done in early rounds against Mayweather by using a good jab and consistent pressure while taxing his defense on the inside against the ropes. I don't dispute the fact Floyd won clearly by the end, but the rounds themselves weren't picture perfect and Oscar seemed to be having an intelligent method of finding some level of success landing against his shoulder roll counter-punching style. Regardless of why it happened, De La Hoya stopped jabbing and squared up without throwing while moving forward and fell victim to FLoyd's speed and accuracy. If Shane were to use the same basic jab & pressure framework that Roach and De La Hoya tried to implement in a more aggressive, physical, consistent, and voluminous way, do you think he will beat Mayweather? Despite being older, any deterioration of his in-ring skills are not at the same level or of the same nature as De La Hoya's. He has much more to prove and the size, reach, and strength advantages without a great disparity in speed between them. Do you think Nazim will go for this plan, and if so, would it work if executed by SSM on May 1st?
its possible bc Mosley still has the size and strength advantage and he can use a jab when he wants to. Mosley is gonna eat a lot of straight rights no matter what. if he can push him back and be in his face all night hes got a shot at landing big. I think shane should go for angles though all night and just try to land something big... thats his best shot.
So you put more faith in Mosley outboxing him at this stage with angles and looking for a KO? I feel like that results in a lot of frustration and not many rounds for the ones that try to do that. Who knows what Nazim will have him go for.
I think Floyd was more tentative early because at 150, he had never tasted a true jr. middle's punch. This is not the case at 147, where he's comfortable with taking a welter's power and will be more inclined to let his hands go a little more. I think Shane can approach this fight one of two ways: 1. Pressure him and clog Floyd's offense by using his jab on the way in to cut off the ring 2. Wait on Floyd to initiate offense then counter-punch off him missing or after parrying his punches. Either strategy is difficult to pull off, but I think Naazim will go with pressure. I think Floyd wins by decision, but Mosley's got more than a shot. It will be interesting to see if Shane can win the first few rounds to make Floyd take more risks in the middle rounds of the fight.
Shane's not a boxer like Hoya though, and he's not a much of a jabber. He's more of fast brawler/slugger. Nazim probably has the right strategy for Shane though, it's all about the execution.
:good It's not like Oscar won anything moar than 3 rounds using Roach's strategy. This time they'll have an incentive not to **** up with the scoring due to the demand for Mayweather-emmanuel beat down that everyone believes must happen.
Shane got outboxed for most of the fight by Ricardo ****ing Mayorga. He is nothing like the fighter he was 10 years ago, and he still would've struggled with Floyd then. The only strategy for Shane is to pray for a lucky punch.
I always hear people say that Mosley can match Floyd for speed, but what about footspeed? It's certainly good to have fast hands, but if your legs aren't quick enough, you're screwed...and Floyd is so fast on his feet that you have to be quick on your own feet to cut off the ring. (Which is why Pacman would be so troublesome to deal with for Floyd...fast hands AND fast feet.) I haven't seen much of Shane, but I don't remember ever being impressed with his footspeed/ability to close the distance. Often he just seems to stand flat-footed and exchange.
Like Pavlik said, even though he doesn't practice what he preaches, but he was right in saying you never go after a mover like Martinez, same thing Mosley shouldn't be stalking or going after Floyd because that's what Floyd is expecting him to do and fights best counterpunching or moving back. Shane is almost about DLH's height and because he has used his jab more as a range finder doesn't mean he can't use it to score valuable points or confuse Floyd. The thing about Floyd is he is great at adapting, so like a prime Winky Wright used to do on Shane, he can go for bodypunches one round, head hunt the next, but just keep changing the tactic to throw Floyd off a bit. He can do over throw that jab to the body or chest like Floyd does and beat him at his own game. Shane has long arms for his height. All this and beside the fact he's the strongest and fastest opponent Floyd has ever faced and a great bodypuncher as well.
