Because he was swarmed and starved of room against the kind of style and physical specimen that would eat up most boxing types.

Marquez's steady and measured pressure with the aim of looking for counters wont be the same kind of fight.

Even still Kenny had a red hot go in that one.

I think SS underates Marquez too a little bit, but he is unproven at the weight, he is also slower, smaller and a stylistiv disadvantage. He has no advantage in toughness, which is unusual, and although he hits hard, we all know he isn't going to stop Ken Buchanan. In other words, he has to win on the score cards. How to do this when he's liable to be beaten to the punch, lacks a world class defence (At lightweight unquestinably), is at a 3 inch reach disadvantage and has a style that basically dooms him to follow his much more mobile opponent around the ring? He loses, by knockout for me.

Casa certainly was on Kens level, I rate Ken higher but in terms of ability on film there isnt much in it, neither is there in the level tey were competing at

Yes Casa had bad night against Cruz who he thought was going to be a walk over. Lots of fighters dont fight as well in these type of fights, ie Whitaker-Rivera. But he redeemed himself against Katsidis. Buchanan lost to Velasquez in his prime and Ishimatsu past his prime so hes hardly the unbeatable force ou pain him to be

Im picking Buchanan to win this but it would be 1 of his trickest hardest fights

Carlos Ortiz was shot. But when I'm talking to you guys I have to play by your rules. If you pull a Casamayor on me, why shouldn't I mention Carlos Ortiz?

Carlos Hernandez was pretty far gone too. he's probably a better fighter than Casamayor though.

Jim Watt in prime form would definitely beat the Juan Diazes and old Casmaayors of the world. No question.

I'm not that big on Marquez even as a featherweight, at lightweight I just don't see any reason to think Marquez has an even chance with Buchanan.

Ofcourse its a different fight but to pretend flush counters dont hurt and have an effect on the other guys game is foolish, good chin or not. Not to mention Marquez proved his power sparking Casa and Diaz. The Diaz KO was 1 of the most amazing KO punches I've seen up there with the Walcott-Charles KO. And Diaz chin looked excellent when he battered Freitas, Julio Diaz, Katsidis and in the loss to Nate

Buchanan's toughness separates them for me. Not that Casa wasn't tough, but he wasn't Buchanan tough. When the going got tough, Ken got going. Unlike boxer types like Casamayor, who seemed to lose effectiveness down the stretches of fights, Buchanan would always be coming on towards the death.

If Ken fought Castillo, Ken would be the one winning the final stages of that fight, and hence winning the fight imo.

He looked just as bad against Katsidis. The writing was on the wall.

Haven't seen it, but I've heard the Velasquez fight was a robbery. It did occur in Velasquez' backyard, so maybe there is some merit to it.

Buchanan losing to Guts is hardly relevant here, we aren't comparing a past prime Buchanan to a lightweight Marquez. If you want to discuss that, then fine, but that's not what I have been talking about here.

I think it's a fight that will look to be going only one way pretty much from the opening bell. Marquez would offer some competition for sure, but he wouldn't come close to winning.

Yeah but it didnt look so good when clammed up against Campbell and was almost knocked out against against Contreras.

Diaz was actually fairly solid defensively with his high guard and generally kept his opponants off balance with his strength and workrate. He somewhat abandoned his skills against Marquez mostly because I think he felt the best way to beat the older, smaller man was to get in there and impose himself on him. Plus Marquez had better technical ability and timing then anyone he had faced up until then..he spelt potential disaster and in the end did..though I rate that as a good win for JMM, he really showed his grit in that one.

Kenny has a better chin then Diaz..you can bank on it.

Watt wasnt that good:lol::lol: You are sounding like a crusty old timer and funny thing is im even a little older than you. Watt was a pretty solid guy but not outstanding and about on Par with Diaz and certainly not as good as a younger Casamayor.

Also ORtiz was more passed it than Casamayor was for Marquez.
Mcgrain mentioned how much bigger he was than Marquez, well ive met both of them and Buchanan isnt any bigger (although Buchanan was probably 50 by then).

Although i know Pac and Buchanan are totally different styles, people seem to forget that Marquez probably beat him and i would not rate Buchanan nearly as high as Pac HTH.

    1. BS Ortiz looked terrible, Casa looked good against JMM and Katsidis. Casa didnt look prime, but he looked good when did Ortiz put in a good performance last?

    2. BS Pretty far gone? Or completely shot?

    3. Ahhh I see your point 'every old time fighter would eat would beat every modern fighter'. Casa and Diaz wer 1 and 2 in the division when Marquez moved up (prior to Campbell dethroning Diaz), JMM Knocked them both out and got ducked by Pacquaio for his trouble

    4. Yea Pacquaio, MAB, Chris John, Juarez, Polo, Gainer, Medina, all a bunch of **** fighters those. Fighting contenders/champs from 97-10 means nothing, its too easy

Boxrec lists Buchanan as the taller man by a half inch. Buchanan was a career lightweight. Marquez came up to lightweight only in pursuit of Pacquiao. Your personal experienec aside, there's little reason to consider them the same size.

YEy Marquez did move up but he is not a small lightweight the guy is pretty cut up and Muscular for a lightweight. I disagree Buchanan wasnt some big lw and probably not as physically strong as Marquez. So you say a half inch huh:think:lol: Thats pretty much the same size.

To put it another way -

The Buchanan who fought Duran would never, ever have been able to squeeze down to 125. Hence, he was a bigger fighter. Whether you consider him a "large lightweight" or not is not the issue. As well as being slower and at a stylistic disadvantage he is also smaller.

I think those suggesting a Marquez victory here are really, really stretching the point.

Ortiz would have had a decent chance against the Casamayor that Marquez beat.

Maybe a TAD worse than Casamayor.

What would they have been ranked in Ken's day? Let me tell you, NOT 1 and 2.

Beating those two guys simply isn't the accomplishment you're trying to convince yourself that it is.

All great lightweight fights. Good point.
