Hatton had a solid career, losing only to the two very best fighters in the sport of boxing.

Because he came at the right time and spent his entire career living off of a victory off a part time past Tszyu. And any boxer with speed and pop beat him.....including Collazo. He was a the Gatti of the UK, loved but not a great fighter. No biggie, he is rich and fat now.

when he beat Tszyu in that epic performance he was a superstar in my eyes.

but somehow over the years he has dwindled in my estimations.

the constant putting on weight in between fights, and not being ashamed of living his council estate lifestyle - eating pie and chips for dinner washed down with eight pints. infact it has always seemed like a stupid populist PR stunt to identify himself as a working class boy with his feet on the ground, never letting fame and fortune change him.

but then sacking Billy Graham and hiring Mayweather Sr. showed his true colours. his famous loyalty and humility went out of the window. walking around in his ridiculous TEAM HATTON merchandise, his own custom logo. so desperate for fame, recognition, adoration...

the constant cheese fest when he is on chat shows, repeating his own daft jokes. the talking in the third person...totally annoying, as if he wants to craft how people perceive him, how things will unravel. As if he is an immortal legend of boxing separate from a human being.

then of course talking big - trash talking Mayweather and Pacquiao, as if he was talented enough to consider them beatable. Seeing his ass handed to him in those two fights have ended the superstar myth of legendary Ricky Hatton - the one which existed in his mind, and the one he managed to stir up with his bull**** in the papers.

i do feel i am being a little harsh on an honest hardworking lad. but as all these things have happened, it has been an anti climax to his media profile, and he will naturally be not thought as highly of as he did before his defeats.

but even Calzaghe suffers from a lack of popularity, recognition as a great, and is terribly insecure about it. and he never even lost....

Interesting. I've always thought that the Tyszyu past his best argument was clearly exaggerated... he'd just destroyed Sharmba Mitchell for heaven's sake.

But overrated? That's a more interesting, sellable argument.

Yet Gatti gets respect and Hatton doesn't?

Read the thread title from the TS you just made the question more relevant. Answer it!

Losing to two super great fighters doesn't make you a bum. Hatton was a beast in his prime, most of which was sadly wasted by Warren's terrible matchmaking

For me its a little different. I don't disrespect Hatton at all. I never saw him early in his career when he supposedly had an incredible high work-rate.
I saw him after Kostya when he stepped up his competition.
I really wanted to like the guy...but I found his style was HELL to watch. I hate all the hitting and holding, hitting and holding...hold some more. He was a little JohnRuizish.
The Floyd fight was entertaining...and I though Hatton did quite well....but everyone talks of how the ref "wouldn't let Hatton fight his fight". Well...to me, thats boxing. If I wanted to watch wrestling I would.

Hmmmm... I just said that Lewis was clearly top 10 heavy ever; that Honeyghan is ridiculously underrated; that Haye is clearly something of a boxing genius; that Naz was, like it or not, superb; that calzaghe had the type of performance that so few boxers achieve; that wins over hatton could only improve rather than hurt a resume; that Khan has the potential to be something special; that Gavin will be top 10 all time (ok last one was in jest, but I think he will be summat special).

I just think that we need to put things in context occasionally.

wtf is wrong wit you? You come here to talk boxing or call names. I have already stated that Naz is a great talent. JMM proved in his fights with Pac that he could deal with a fighter with outstanding talents just like Naz. Grow the **** up!

Ok sorry for calling you a clown its a bit of banter, its not like i called you a ***** is it, however as it obviously deeply upset you i apologise, however my point stands if naz would have run into JMM he'd have blitzed him at that time, the fight wouldnt have happened coz JMM was a nobody in them days

To be honest I never liked Ricky, I like skilled boxers and he never was one of those. To be kind I never liked RJJ either (RJJ was one of if not the most naturally talented boxers ever but he never, or even tried to, master his craft). In no way shape or form am I comparing Ricky to RJJ (LMFAO). he was way overrated by his fans and got protected at home for using his rough house tactics. I always thought he was only a talented barroom brawler.

I think the British more than any other country tend to over rate their fighters. Mexicans have a deep passion for their fighters who have a warrior spirit and will go out on their shield win or lose. Cubans take pride in their athletically gifted and skilled fighters. Asians admire their Humble warriors. Eastern Europeans take pride in their technically sound fighters. Americans . . . they are all over the place . . . I think more than anyone else they like for the successful fighters to fall on their faces. If there is any group I failed to offend I apologize.
