How effective would PWill be if he actually did use his height and reach advantages? He's 6'3 (though listed as 6'1) which is as tall as a light heavyweight and has a reach longer than some heavies (82 inches), if he fought tall like a Hearns or a Klitschko would he have more succsess against shorter fighters (which almost all his opponents have been shorter)

It would make him harder to beat him but he would still be very beatable.

He'd obviously be very effective if he had the tools to back up his height and reach. The problem is he doesn't have the discipline to box behind his advantages and he has terrible range control.

Paul still doesn't know how to properly use distance to take advantage of his height. Plus his jab is like a range finder, it's not designed to cause damage, so any comparisons to Tommy Hearns are out the window. I honestly don't see Paul Williams growing as a fighter - in fact, I see opponents developing a solid blueprint to neutralize his height and reach advantage.

I wasn't trying to compare the two because i know paul could never fight like the hitman for the full 12 but i hope your wrong about the blueprint his opponents can build up on because he really does do the same thing every fight which has worked well so far but it would be good to see him try to change things up a bit

If he used his size to his advantage he would be better but less exciting.

No. It's not necessarily that he doesn't fight tall, but tall at heavy and tall at welter are too very different things. Welters are simply too fast to fight a slow controled fight at distance like the Klitschkos are able to do. In the end, it's all about footspeed.

I'd say he's been pretty effective to date. What's his record again?:D

He fought perfectly on the outside against Winky which makes perfect sense but then he came on Martinez who is fast enough to negate the reach and get on the inside where long arms are a detriment.
Martinez is just a freak in the speed department, there's no one else north of LMW that matches him so Paul is fine.

I'm not talking about how effective he is overall, in case you can't read that's not what this thread is about. We're talking about behind his height and reach, which he barely uses. That's a credit to him as a fighter because he has got other tools to back it up, namely his punch-output and durability. He's not been effective using his reach and that's what we're discussing.

He'd rule the 154-160 lb divisions with absolute ease and impunity. But, he doesn't so he's just another average joe in my book. Hasn't impressed me at all from a technical stand point.

its funny how before the Sergio Martinez fight everyone agreed he was that good. 1 fight later, hes overrated and average...

but did anyone say that about Floyd when he fought jose luis castillo, or andre berto when he fought luiz collazo, or manny pacquiao when he almost lost juan manuel marquez, or shane when he actually lost to vernon and winky, or calzaghe when he almost lost to bernard??? my point is all top fighters have that one tough fight...all of them but it seems that only paul williams gets ****.....

He's a tall guy for WW/LMW, he would pick guys at that division easily. But fighters with great footspeed might be his kryptonite. Once that guy started fighting from the inside, Pwill's long range will be of no use.

You don't really need to develop anything as he gives it up for you. The one time I saw him use his height was against Margo, he didn't get near him until about the 6th round. It makes Williams a very entertaining fighter to watch and I'm fine with that.
