Was Rodolfo Gonzalez really that big of a puncher?

He makes the Ring's list for the 100 greatest punchers...his numbers are certainly impressive.

But they seem to me to be quite inflated by a lot of bouts against pretty poor opposition..especially in his early career at home.

From the film Ive seen of him he seems more like a smooth, consistent and accurate puncher rather then an explosive or concussive type of puncher.

Also read his that Puddu and Navarro were pulled from their fights from a combination of facial injuries and getting dominated. I havent seen the fights but could you put that down the Gonzalez' skill and accuracy as much as his power?

Im not so bothered that a few cans went the rounds with him and that he took a while to take out some of his lesser opponants who were usually taken out fairly easily by other guys...but I guess that could add to the argument.

But I really want to see more of the guy...he was a fine fighter regardless.

It's extremely hard to say for sure just how hard he hit because of the limited footage.Especially when only one is a victory of course. One where he was reputed to have carried Carmona a bit.

Jofre is in a similar situation, lots of people that watched him fight thought he was the better overall boxer-puncher than Robinson because he had even more two fisted power...or was at least as hard a hitter as Olivares and Zarate. He has more true knockouts than most Bantam's, but the limited footage(two losses again) aren't enough evidence and don't quite depict that level of power.Hence he's ended up being a but forgotten as a puncher compared to the mexican greats.

It's almost certain he hit very hard and he's reputed to have scored a vast amount of sudden bodyshot stoppages.I think it's likely he was in the same rough category as the usual suspects of that era ....Gomez, Olivares, zarate, Duran, or Rosario to mention another lightweight etc..just where exactly i couldn't really say without seeing more fights.

Carmona is a friend of the family ... I am gonna ask him what he thinks.
