April 15th 1985. Hagler/Hearns. A day which changed boxing 25 years ago today.

It was a **** fight.....I saw it live on HBO. Hearns fought stupidily and was out on the town with hookers the evening before the fight.. Hagler sucked, wild ass south paw punching while looking at the floor.

Leonard/Hearns first fight was a much greater and better fight.:good

 

That fight will always be held in high regard. Hagler was handed a win? I never saw Hagler rocked and his leg give in before. Hearns hit Hagler and Hagler was rocked and stunned and then Hagler was cut. That isn't giving someone a win, Hagler earned it. Someone has to win a war like that, and the natural middleweight won is all you can say. Look at the punchstats. Hearns landed one more punch than Hagler in round one. Incredible fight. Two of the best fighters ever coming out throwing punches with heart and determination and guts. They showed what boxing and fighting was about. All through 1985 and 1986 all you heard about was Hagler/Hearns and it has lasted all these years. Hagler and Hearns redefined great fights that night in April of 1985.

 

You probably saw the HBO rebroadcast on Sat. April 20, 1985. The fight being ****? Well then you must see great fights like that everyday, I don't and never had. Not with that intensity and not since a first round. It was a rare fight between two of the best fighters in the game in 1985. What first round matches Hearns and Hagler and the punch connect? It was a great fight with everything crammed into 3 rounds. Both fighters were hurt in round one and both guys unloading and showing heart and skill. What more can you ask. Leonard/Hearns was a great fight I admit, but it was different. Hagler and Hearns was more personal. Hagler/Hearns was not about boxing skill it was about chins and heart.

I wasnt born til a month after the fight,ive seen it loads of times since,best 1st round ever,Hagler was a beast of a man..

 

Hagler was motivated and ready for this fight. This was his last great performance where he was prime and ready and sharp.

Hard to say which fight compares to Hagler/Hearns. It is rare to find a fight which starts off as a war right from the first bell. Usually they work into it gradually. The Hagler/Hearns fight was not your typical fight or war. Very different. Hard to say. In the 1980's there were two other fights I recall which were wars right from the get go, but not recently. Mancini vs. Art Frias and then Rosario vs. Ramirez which was a rematch. Somehow at that time it happened more, yet Hagler/Hearns was a war the whole first round just at the opening bell. Very different.

 

Hagler's best fight was when he fought Sugar Ray Leonard, and he was exposed for the bumbling sloth of a fighter he was. No foot work, can't cut off the ring, can't box or counter, and on top of it all he was a southpaw.....and Ray Leonard made him look the fool.....and then we did not have to see or hear of him again. Good riddance :hi:to the most over rated MW in history who made a name for himself fighting blown up LW,WW, and LMW at a time when there were NO decent MW.

Those were great fights. Guys now do not come to fight like they did in the 1980's. Who knows why.

Hagler and Hearns blocked punches with their chins. Did either guy miss with punches? Almost everything landed for both. That is insane. No fighters in the world no matter what stamina will last too long in this kind of intense war. They were both going full energy. Incredible fight. Both guys took chances. Hearns could have won just as easily as Hagler the way both were open. Both gambled and Hagler won the gamble. Very evenly matched guys.
