How highly do you rate Tommy Loughran?

Easily top 6 at LH ,and certainly in my 100 ATG's.

 

Top 10 at 175 without a doubt.

 

Probably only.
1.Tunney.
2.Charles.
3.Moore.
4.Foster.
The top two are interchangeable imo.
After these it would be something like.
5.Loughran
6.Conn
7.Spinks.
8.Delaney
9.Johnson.
10.Jones.

Greb and Langford should be in the mix but where, I don't know?

Loughran was never able to turn that lost to a win in the rematch.

 

Sure, but according to many sources Loughran beat Tunney, despite only being a teenager at the time. Tunney, ironically, never rematched Loughran. Beating Tunney is more signifigant than beating Delaney.

I like Harold Johnson over Loughran. He seemed to me a more complete version of Tommy, with an even better left jab.

 

He made my top 6 also. He reminds me of a matador.

 

He was a truly great fighter.

 

Loughran was more fleet-footed, perhaps a bit tougher and craftier with the old time tricks, Harold was more technically sound.

Tunney vs Loughran was apparently a close fight at an early stage in their careers. I don't really count it as a win for either. Unfortunately they never fought again. I believe Loughran was the more willing of the two to get in the ring again. Loughran and Delaney should have also had another fight. Loughran did better against heavyweights, but Delaney employed a similar style and punched harder.

Loughran was an incredible fighter.

I think that he was cleverer than Gene Tunney, and if he had Tunneys power he would have been almost unbeatable at the time.

He gave Tunney the blueprint for beating Harry Greb.

 

The difference was Loughran, because of his bad hands, had allmost zero power,whereas Delaney had a natural ko right hand.

 

Maybe he relied on that power too much which is why he couldn't deal with bigger heavyweights like Loughran could. Delaney also wasn't much more than a super middleweight in today's terms.

 

"Bright Eyes" did manage to stop,pretty big heavies like Montgomery with one right hand Ist rd. Also he kod Gorman 2rds, Rojas 4rds.
