How is it that some boxers never get that "ripped" physique?

Im sure I'll get hit with it's mainly gentics, but is that all really?

I mean I think its natural to see two guys weighing in and if you dont know either of them, but one is freakishly ripped (pacman style) and the other just looks like he got off his coutch to weigh in, to think the guy with awesome physique is gonna win. Then half the time the guy with no tone somehow has feakish stamina and strength.

I mean look at the Pavlik Martinez weigh in, who do you think the friend of the boxing fan thats just over for a few drinks to watch a fight, and knows nothing about boxing would pic? (if they weren't a white guy from the trailer park :yep)

What are everyone's thoughts on this subject?

it is very much to do with genetics. People build muscle far easier than others, people can put on weight far easier, and others can lose it far easier. Skill and heart are the equalizers

some people are able to develop muscles far easier than other muscles, but that also could be to do with skeletal frame.

    Genetics and diet.

    More the latter.

You can have excellent endurance but a ridiculously high fat percentage thus equating to a more soft look.

However, genetics also play a factor.

I have a friend who just does not have the genetics for abdominal muscles. Throws about 100+ punches a round in the amateurs though. His punch count is insane.

I would say most everyone can get themselves in a lean/somewhat lean condition...........but the deciding factor is discipline.

I agree that some are genetically at a disadvantage and can't get quite as developed as others, but discipline is 90% of it. How you control your diet, and training,

Someone like tubby up above could become lean and more impressive, but he has next to no willpower. I think even he admits that.

I think a lot of it is genetics.

I train daily, am vegetarian, etc. but I will never be unbelievably ripped. I am, however, definitely at least fit given all of that.

They dont eat properly. Barely do any road work. Especially the Heavyweights. If these guys were not fat , they would not even be in the division. they would be LHW , CW Arreola could probably make SMW

Agreed. Sometimes the tiniest changes in diet & supplements can have the hugest impact. And of course, there's also genetics.

A large part of it is to do with training, diet, and of course dedication. An example being Ricky Hatton. We've seen the alarming weight he puts on between fights, but after a training camp, he's slim, ripped, and ready to go.

But yes like other have already mentioned, genetics play a role. Look at Juan Diaz, a very soft looking lightweight, with an incredible work rate. He is a guy who can train as hard as he wants, but will never get that same ripped look that a Pacquiao has.

A look like Wlad is genetics, but everybody can have a toned looked. This whole arguement fat people have, which is that their weight is based on genetics is crap. It is a fat, lazy, American life style that makes people fat. Go to where our desendants came from; Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Look around and tell me how many fat people are there in comparison to the US. I live in Europe right now and everytime I fly home to the US it shocks me to see all these fat people again.

When people say obesity runs in their family, they are right but for the wrong reason. It runs in the family not because of genetics but because of poor diet and exercise habits which are passed down from generation to generation. This is really bad in the American south where they put insane amounts of sugar in everybody and deep fry anything they can think of.

With out a doubt its diet but its best that they are not so ripped because its always better to be loser than tighter than too have too much muscle in boxing it can take a toll on a fighter if they go into deep waters .
