How is it that some boxers never get that "ripped" physique?

It boils down to one of 3 factors:
1)Genetics- some people have the ability to be extremely fit and strong, but even while doing so, aren't going to look like bodybuilders or be extremely ripped. It also can make it easier for certain fighters to excel in certain physical attributes, muscle definition being one of them. Some rare fighters can eat like ****, train moderately, and still look like The Hulk.

2)Diet- an obvious one. Messing with this is a key in determining how a fighter gains and loses weight and combined with the other two, what kind of weight it's going to be.

3)Training- Not just lack of it/laziness. How a boxer trains determines his look and how much superficial (glamour) muscles they'll put on. Some will train in a way that puts on more skeletal muscle, which won't give definition but will give more strength. Also, the more a fighter trains for pure conditioning, typically the leaner they'll look and the less muscular and bulky they'll appear because it's harder for guys who train like that to carry as much muscle as a fighter who does more strength exercises but less cardio/road work. In the upper classes, fighters who tend to focus on superficial muscle tend to put themselves at a higher risk of gassing out because of the oxygen consumption those muscles take. Guys like Jermain Taylor and Shannon Briggs are examples of that.

Genetics. My best friend growing up could bench 400, squat around 600, was fast as hell, but at 5'9 215 he kinda looked like Eddie Chambers.

Bench, deadlift and squat has little to do with it. Few powerlifters are ripped. The key to a ripped physique is (next to exercising) a perfectly controlled carb intake.

One could spend 10 hours in the gym every day and have Arnold's genes but if one eats tons of pasta/rice/potatoes/chips/sugars one would never lose that last bit of bodyfat that keeps the chiseled physique from becoming visible.

A lot of people are complaining of fatigue and low energy levels when cutting out carbohydrates (= energy the body can easily absorb). That's why some boxers hire nutritionists/dietitians to help them develop a diet that fits their weight class and training camp.

So is it fair to say, someone like Timmy Bradley, who obviously has the genetics to be freakishly phyiqued, doesnt have try as hard than, say a pavlik type to get in prime boxing shape? (stamina, strength, power, etc / traits you can train to get, obviously not heart and determination)

Hard to say because Bradley trains freakishly hard and diets pretty hardcore(fasts the first 5 days of camp, then a strict vegan throughout).

  10. Bradley is also clearly on steroids. There's absolutely nothing genetic about him.

    genetics, DIET and training

    its not complicated

you can still achieve what you want even if the Genetics arent the best, it just will take more work

Its just 2 things, diet & type of training.

To look slim you just need diet or cardio exercise to burn the fat. That wont give you a toned look though, not necesarily.

To look toned you need to build muscle, and strip the fat, so really its a mixture of bodybuilding, cardio & diet.

Haye for example lifts weight, would watch his diet or work out enough to burn the food he eats.

Someone like Juan Diaz can work as much as he likes, he can burn 4000 calories a day but if he is consuming 7000, he is not gonna loose that fat, though his stamina and endurance may be very good.

A marathon runner someone mentioned earlier is skinny but not toned, that is because he has stripped the fat but has no muscle to show behind it. Its like doing situps, building abs but its covered in fat, or not doing situps, loosing the fat on the belly but no abs to show behind the skin thus no six pack.

The reason why some boxers looked ripped despite not doing weights is because of genes, some people gain muscle very easily, they can gain it for example from basic bodyweight exercises you do in boxing, or even develop shoulder/back muscles just from hitting the bag.

Those who do not develop muscle easily wont develop muscles from basic bodyweight exercises, therefore even though their boxing, not fat, they dont look toned. They can still however overcome that by going a step further for that "toned" look, lift weights to build muscle so the muscle will show up under that skin.

Basically, EVERYONE can look toned, some just has to do more than others.

  14. That is by design though and also serves boxers well - that extra muscle would require oxygen which is at a high premium in 12 round boxing matches and distance running.

Don't mean to change the subject so slightly here but can someone answer this?

What exactly will a sauna/sweat suit do for you? What are the benifits? Is it just making weight? As I have heard that the heat raises metabolism and it's also good equipment for burning fat.. but many will disagree and say it's just for making weight.
