As far as Taylor 2 -- at that point, regardless of who people thought won the fight -- I felt making a big deal of it wasn't necessary at the time. After seeing Taylor vs Spinks, I also picked him to lose the 1st bout to Pavlik, who had fought Miranda that same night. Pavlik almost got taken out in the second, but to his credit he won.

I thought Pav lost the rematch with Taylor by a hair, but I doubt I posted about it on this site. Kelly deserved his time to shine, so he should have had it. I thought Pav would win tonight, but he didn't. Sergio deserves his time to shine tonight, and that can't be disputed.

All credit to Martinez, considering it was his left hand that sliced Pavlik's eye open.

bute losing to pavlik is a joke. bute is a big, 168 pounder, with good skills and can be slick, and has recently shown good power in his punches. bute is like martinez but bigger and with power. pavlik would suffer a brutal ko.

What Pavlik doesn't have is confidence. He's never going to get that from his corner. He needs a new trainer who's gonna make him a better fighter. He doesn't have to be the fastest or the most coordinated. He just needs to go back to the basics and focus on his strong points. Most of all, he needs to learn how to use his body to his advantage. He could be a big SM. He needs to use his length to his advantage in fights.

True. I didn't believe Martinez could pull this off. I thought he was too small to do it, but he still won decisively. I've never said Pavlik can't be relevant again; that's something him and his team have to sort out. He lost to Sergio tonight.

I was wrong about Martinez, who deserves so much credit for what he did tonight. That's pretty much it.

he's not that bad. he's just slow footed. styles make fights. if pac had been fighting fleet footed counterpunchers the last few years people wouldn't be putting him at the top of # for # lists. Pav looks like a monster against the right type of fighter.

I think he will still remain a force at middle if he wants to be. Think about it... hes still one of its top top fighters, and a Pavlik vs Sturm fight is still there, a Pavlik vs Jacobs fight is still there as soon as Jacobs feels ready, and Pavlik will still be no pushover for Williams.

Pavlik will remain a player, and a relevant force (IF he stays at middle) for a long time to come still IMO. A hard loss against an excellent boxer like Martinez doesnt change that. Pavlik will still be hell for someone whos not speedy and mobile.

But if he will ever be a champion again, that i do have my doubts.

No way Kirk. I have always had a ton of respect for you as a poster...But you are WAY off on this one. Pavlik is the beneficiary of "AWESOME MATCHMAKING" that allowed him to pad his record. Imagined if "his people" had him fighting (within his first 18-22 fights) talented and skillful former or current belt holders ala Devon Alexander, Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell...etc. No-one would have ever heard of Kelly Pavlik.

His first "real" test was Hopkins...and Hopkins who has always been a safety first fighter, was showboating, hands down at his side NOT fearing Pavlik's Power. Even Martinez was toying with him. Pavlik is too stationary, robotic/mechanical with NO ability to box nor skillfully exchange without getting hit. Yeah sure, he has Power...But as a fan of "Hoops", Its like a Ball-player with big-time "HOPS". Yeah he can Jump, but he can't dribble, can't shoot, and plays NO defense. So not only will he not score...he can't stop anyone either. Pavlik will be out of the sport in 18 months!!!!

He will be relevant, but his Achilles heel will be skilled boxers with good lateral movement and speed, like Martinez. This rock'em sock'em robot was good enough to hand Taylor his first two defeats, one being by KO. If beating an undefeated elite "Top Shelf Fighter" isn't good enough in your book to be considered of having any "Real skill" or being top shelf or relevant, but just a rock'em sock'em robot, then you must have some tough standards or simply double standards.
