Hopkins was a 43-year-old ex-middleweight champion...Pavlik had fights at 154 and several above middleweight. Sergio fought at 147, 154 and 160 previously. Anyway, I guess what I mean to say is blah, blah, blah, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam.
It is obviously less impressive, especially considering Hopkins was as good that night at dealing with a Pavlik-esque style as he ever was (arguably better insofar as worse fighters than Pavlik took a couple of rounds off him through pressure fighting when he was in his supposed "prime"). You can't just say, "Ah, he was old, etc." It was a great performance.
THATS RIGHT.... hopkins was a walk in tha park...SERGIO had NO walk in the park.. at least not the mid rounds...look at his face,.. then the cut issue, i still think B HOPS win was more golden...
Further cements the fact that Calzaghe would have raped Pavlik all over the place if they ever fought.
Please explain the maths. 43 year old Hop takes Pavliks 0 but somehow his win is relegated because Martinez beat him. O i get it now.
Pavlik has always been over rated. I remember a time when it looked like he might fight Calzaghe and I told everyone he would get whipped, I remember everyone laughing and saying that he would KO Calzaghe. Anyways, the problem with Pavlik, and this has always been the case, is that he is a stand up 1-2 fight with good power in both hands, Consequently, if you don't have much ring craft and/or stamina he can look great, however, if you possess the ring craft and just about enough in the tank to get through 12 rounds, you are likely to beat him, and beat him well as he just stands in front of you trying to unload his 1-2 combo and ends up eating leather all night.
Styles make fights. Calzaghe Pavlik would NOT have been a clinic. Joe was hardly known for his slick boxing skills. The one thing this fight would have been is a war. A war that Joe would have won.
Big difference Hopkins is the same height as Pavlik. Pavlik had the reach advantage against Martinez. Also Pavlik had the weight advantage. But it didn't matter, Martinez still won give the man credit.
It would not have been a war as Calzaghe would not have stood in front of him and would have landed loads of pita-pat shots all night. Also, Calzaghe did have a fairly good chin, his knockdown from B-Hop was a classic catch you off guard/balance moment, while the one to RJJ was a forearm smash that caught him in the partly in the neck. In my humble opinion Calzaghe vs Pavlik would have been like B-Hop v Pavlik, Pavlik would have been hit all night and Calzaghe would have avoid all Pavlik's best shots and won by UD. Also, remember if they ever did fight it would have been at 170+.
