Hopkins- A 43 year old legend who Pavlik was supposed to beat into retirement. Pavlik was absolutely dominated from beginning to end in this fight en route to his first loss as a professional. Martinez- A 35 year old top light middleweight. The smaller man going into the fight and a slight underdog. Martinez didn't dominate the entire fight like Hopkins but where Hopkins was the bigger man against Pavlik, Martinez was the smaller man and looked to have actually hurt Pavlik worse. What do you guys think? Which fight was worse for Pavlik and his career?
I think the Hopkins figth was worse, because Pavlik seemed to have ZERO chance in that fight... He actually looked ok in the middle rounds last night. But I never would have guessed that in the last 4 rounds Martinez was going to sit in the pocket and destroy Pavlik.. The 9th was a 10-8 in my book
Pavlik v Hopkins was one of those bouts were a boxer moves up in weight to take on a great...win or lose, he moves back down in weight and keeps his title. Although he got dominated, no-one could fault his attempt to move up in weight to take on Hopkins, whether it was an old Hopkins or not. I think the Martinez defeat is worse because he not only loses his title, he is defeated at his own weight class by a guy who recently moved up to Middleweight. Now it looks like there may be a rematch between Martinez and Williams, and Pavlik needs to fight his way back into the mix.
I pretty much agree with this^^^. He no longer can claim he is the best MW and i think Pavlik will no longer be a marquee fighter again. Thing this is the begining of the end for him.
Martinez was worse since it was against a smaller guy. Hopkins, althougt he wasn't in his prime, was much bigger than Pavlik & already had the HOF status...
I say Martinez was the worse lost cause you can make a case that Hopkins was the stronger man at a higher weight while Martinez is the smaller fighter at Pavlik's weight. And even though Hopkins won it by a shut out, he didn't bleed Pavlik all over the place the way Martinez did.
They both whupped his ass, but I picked Martinez...it was supposed to be Pavlik's comeback, but he failed.
The Martinez fight ..The Hopkins fight was predictable based on experienced ..Plus he lost his belts to Martinez more salt on the wound!
and that said,with only two losses..ummmm...makes me wonder what fighters say...its easier to be remember at your worst,than your best............pavlik is young and will come back..and i cant say im a fan of pavlik!
clearly hopkins, look at all the idiots voting martinez. pavlik had some moments where he was in this fight but against hopkins it was a complete shut out start to finish.
Hopkins was clearly the more dominant performance, but I don't think its all that black and white. There's something to be said for losing clearly and getting absolutely pummelled in stretches by a guy who is a lot smaller compared to getting owned by a bigger fighter who had a legendary career(though he was 43).
Hopkins. Pavlik showed tremendous will and impressive skill in getting himself back into the Martinez fight despite bad cuts and extreme disadvantages in freshness, speed, and mobility.
The way he lost against Martinez is what worries me. Against Hopkins he looked like a young strong man even at the end of the fight. He looked completely spent and beaten by Martinez. I'm not denigrating Martinez, he did what he needed to to win, but in my in my opinion he did not look great in the fight and the style he employed to destroy Pavlik can be copied by other fighters. Pavlik is exposed now. If the rematch happens I give would give Pavlik an excellent chance to win. Aside from that I see him losing most of the challenging fights left for him.
