Who takes it ? I can't see Frank knocking Oscar out,so his best bet would be to pick up points with that ram rod jab and right hand, and win over the distance, which is possible. More likely though,is for Bonavena to absorb everything Frank throws, and stops a gassed out Bruno in the latter stages.
I think Bruno's size, power, conditioning and lengthy jab are the deciding factors for me. While Oscar's durability was proven and then some, I could still see Frank breaking him down and stopping him late.
That's how I see it. Frank piled up a huge points lead on a tight and unresponsive Smith (exactly like Tyson later would), but Ringo wasn't the type to freeze up. Ultimately, I think it comes down to who can stand up to the other, and I believe Bruno would wilt late. Much could depend on how long the scheduled distance is. Ellis may have eventually crumbled against Bonavena given a 15 round distance, and Frazier was actually tiring with Oscar coming on a bit at the end of their Philadelphia rematch. In ten rounds, Bruno has a good shot, over 12, it's much more of a toss up. Over the championship distance, I might place money on Ringo.
Bruno was not fluid and Oscar was an awkward brawler. Oscar would land some with authority but Bruno had a good jab and could pop. This prime for prime could go either way but because of style I go with Oscar SD10
Bonavena would get him eventualy. He might drop most of the early rounds but he would close the deal before the final bell.
Bonavena was too awkward and strong for Bruno..he'd take a close/split decision with maybe a flash knockdown of Bruno along the way.
I think Bruno gets flattered by a lot on this forum without justification. Oscar to rough him up by 6 or 7. If he can drop Frazier twice hes more than capable of KOing or stopping Bruno
I'm going to have to think a lot about Oscar's durability before I answer this. On the one hand, he was never down over 25 rounds against Joe Frazier. On the other hand, when he got tired against Ali he dropped like Herbie Hide and he looked awful against Jimmy Ellis. I'll look at Bonavena's big fights when I get the time and decide. Currently I'm inclined to think Bruno would have too much side, power and a nasty style for Bonavena, but I also think that Bonavena was a much better boxer and brawler that people tend to think.
good prediction , anyone who doesn't see it , try to imagine bruno with a mustache , i think he could have grown one. if you are still unconvinced , suppose he would be allowed to have a duran beard as well along with his mustache. now that is convincing. take some grayscale footage of him , and now you get one of the greatest of all time.
Bruno's whole career was built almost entirely on set-ups, tomato cans and has-been second-raters. And even against some of them he failed to impress.
