Regardless of what you think of Erdei as a fighter, he is still lineal king at light heavy...Gonzalez is probably his best win, although beating Frag whilst giving away nearly 20 lbs is pretty solid
yeah he is one of the top guys for sure, just where at the top he is a question... interesting to see if his prime already passed
He cant be too bad. Undefeated in 31 fights, 2 weight world champ, whos been in 13 world title fights. Holds wins over Gonzalez, Garay (twice), Sahnoune, Ulrich and Fragomeni. You could argue the calibre of fighters, but its not a bad run. I guess one of the problems Erdei has is not being to well known outside of where he fights from. Everyone knows who WW A Berto is fighting in America and alot of people rate him but look at who he won his vacant title against M A Rodriguez and defended against the smaller S Forbes with 6 loses, Collazo, Urango and Quintana which isnt the most outstanding opposition either but they are a more well known bunch due to fighting out of America.
i agree with you 100 percent and also to the guy above who said he only fights on home turf, this is again true but it is true of many fighters not just him [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESOo2n8BCb4&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efBVBkh3Gvc&feature=related[/ame]
He's got the Calzaghe disease. Nobody was really sure how good Joe was until he fought Lacy. Until Erdei fights elsewhere, we may not know exactly how good he is. He's definitely a good fighter, I'm just not sure how good.
He was probably in top10 in most protected fighters currently. I believe fighting such awful opposition was harmful for him in the long run as he was quite skillfull boxer otherwise and in his prime could win some fights even against top opposition (and lose some while probably still giving a good fight). So overall good boxer, but far from great. I wouldn't overestimate the fact that he is lineal champ. IMHO, being lineal champion counts only as long as you fight the best opposition, and already DM slipped here somewhat. Erdei didn't fight anyone decent for it (got it from Gonzales, who in turn got it from shot DM in somewhat questionable decision), nor did he do anything to prove he is worth it.
Suffers for the Universum disease, the German stable that overprotects even their very good fighters, think Sergiy Dzinziruk for another example. He's technically very sound with excellent handspeed, but a boring style and very limited marketablity, which resulted in an extremely mediocre LHW reign and some really bad title defenses. Too bad the Fragomeni fight didn't get better press, because he turned some heads there, giving away almost 20 pounds and still brawling it out in an instant classic (it's out there on YT). The fight happened because Universum wanted him out and "big talent" Brahmer in for the WBO belt without matching them, so now he's beltless at 175, and I doubt anyone wanna fight him.
Whats the Calzaghe disease? Calzaghe was champ, the main SMW for years. Why should he have had to have fought away? And to who? You must have seen something in the guy pre Lacy, he beat all the other top American SMWs in Mitchell, Sheika and Brewer etc and not to mention that pre Lacy Calzaghe also beat Reid, Woodhall, Eubank, Starie and Veit (who holds a win and loss to current WBO LHW champ Braehmer). As for Erdei unless hes in a unification bout why should he defend his titles away? Hes shown hes not awful with some of the names on his record, even if not shown hes the best. Look at say Pavliks MW defences (not his MW title win) which have been at home and to whom they were against. I think Erdei Just needs to be marketed better but that dosent need to be done abroad.
