It's a real shame that the prime of his career was basically spoiled by those who were meant to be making the most of his talent.
The fight is a delay for Tua's career really, the 3 fight deal was planned. But Seldon dropped out in February, so i guess the next bum he's fighting is Barret. Would have been nice if he used his 2# ranking from the wbo, to get a fight with a top 5 contender though. All these chumps he's fighting are not helping his development. It's gonna be a big step up in class to fight the Klitschko's, so beating a guy in the top 25 isn't exactly gonna prepare him....
What's funny is when Haye fought Barrett (and had himself a little scare, even) his fans declared that he'd "arrived" at heavyweight. Now he's not good enough for a "get it the **** outta the way" fight to finish off Tua's shitty contract.
This fight is simply a paycheck for Barrett. It does not prove much and the only preparation it might give Tua is to get in better condition.
This is what's it's for. To get the Maori TV contract out of the way & also keep Tua motivated, fit and off the BK.
Would someone please prevent Barrett from fighting? Monte was a serviceable contender seven or eight years ago, but now he is just getting beat up.
I like Barrett, but it seems like every few months he's getting beaten up by another big puncher. He's looking at long term damage the way he is going these days :-(
I am sure he could become a trainer or something, it just seems like he will be a broken man when he gets older.
As I understand it there is nothing stopping Tua fighting on PPV in other countries, it's just NZ that MaoriTV have the rights to... But having said that Team Tua recently offered Arreola the entire US PPV take to get in the ring and thery declined... at least thats what Ced the Walrus says...
I really hope that Cedric does have the goods to get Tua big fights when the time comes. Most likely right now it's Barrett, then Rahman - then Top 5 guys. Could be a plan.
Here's what happened: David Higgins, the promoter in NZ, offered Tua and Cameron half a mil to fight last October. They both agreed. Maori TV had one more contractual fight with Tua. Mr Higgins worked out a deal with all parties concerned that the last MTV contractual fight would not happen vs Cameron, as it would destroy the promotion (NZers would stay at home and watch it on TV). Tua was thinking about doing a tune up in June to fulfill his contract, and also tune-up after 2 years of inactivity. He was talked out of it by different people, saying that if he had a poor showing, it might jeopardise the Cameron fight. He desperately needed money, and couldn't chance it. So he signed a new deal with MTV saying that after Cameron, he'd sign on for 3 new MTV fights if Maori TV let him out of his last MTV fight against Cameron. Everyone agreed. So the first fight was against Friday Ahunanya. The second fight will be against Barrett. The third fight will be of similar calibre. Tua makes $50,000 from MTV. For whatever reason, promoters don't have the money to pay for a big name fighter due to the MTV free to air contract. Once the third fight is complete, he will fight an eliminator, or top ten guy with an eye to fighting Haye or Klit. Or possibly, go straight to a fight against Haye or Klit and not a top ten guy. What's not to like? He's been inactive for 2 years. Knocks Cameron out in 2 rounds, goes 12 with Friday, a guy who has never been knocked down, faces Barrett to stay active against a former contender, fights one more fight on his MTV contract, and then goes for a title, or a bout against WBO #3 Arreola as an eliminator. Tua needs to stay active, stay in condition, get his skills and mojo back, and then tackle a top fighter. It's laid out perfectly in my eyes. It's the last roll of the dice at 37 years old. He's happy, free of Kevin Barry, and very focussed on a title.
Meh, not a great fight but I get it. He could be fighting some chump like Snowsovski or whatever his name is for the WBC title.... that's an appalling fight. All I would say is nothing wrong with fights like this to get out of the contract, but have them a bit closer together. Fight in June, then August, then he's done. That's all he needs between fights. Take the old George Foreman route. FIght every few weeks against semi-stiffs just to keep momentum going.
