No "clear" law? There is no law, period. Which means that it is not a foul unless deemed so by the Ref. Which no Ref has ever deemed a check hook to be a foul.

I understand that is the gray area... it would then seem to be up to the official to consider it a spin. It is a matter of opinion it seems and in practice it seems that this rule needs to be further clarified so to prevent a death or serious injury in the ring.

    Let me get this straight...

The punch that Tyson did on Buster Mathis Jr is a pivot punch? And is illegal?

IIRC, I thought Tyson merely stepped to the side and launched some upper cuts.

    Actually, here's the video. 3m 10 in.

No it doesn't. A check hook is no more dangerous than a normal hook. Really it is less so as the lack of a stable base sacrifices some power. You seem to forget that Hatton got up from that punch. He was stopped by the barrage of punches that came after.

A lunging punch? Yes, it's legal.

    A backhand/pivot punch? No.

No, that's just a right uppercut delivered after a nice side step by Iron Mike. Great maneauver on his part, and definitely a legal blow.

Tyson's punch was not a pivot punch. It was perfectly legal and fundamentally great boxing.
From what I understand a pivot punch is when a fighter spins completely around (360 degrees) on the heel of his foot and follows through with a hook. Backhand or forehand are both illegal. Like a spinning back fist in mma. Even if the boxer finishes it like a legal punch it's still against the rules. I've never seen anyone try it, though.
As far as a superman punch, I think they are legal but not very smart because they waste power and seem to leave a boxer way out of balance. I'm sure someone has tried it against Valuev. There must be video somewhere.

the pivot punch you quoted earlier talks about a complete turn, the would be 360 degrees

that isn't a leaping or jumping punch

You mustve missed Berto v. Quintana. This rule was in full effect.

Watch Haglers KO on Hearns. He jumps when he lands the right, but its not superman punch

Anyone doing an MMA superman punch in boxing is either an idiot, or a fighter who has total control of the fight.
