From what I'm told, he's upset with himself right now, and that is to be expected. He's a competitor and a (former) champion. For the second time he's been undressed publicly by a very skilled fighter. It's not difficult to see that this could be very discouraging for a fighter and lead to any fighter questioning themselves. Given Kelly's shortcomings, he cannot step through the ropes discouraged or questioning himself. He has to have 100% confidence that what he is good at can overcome his shortcomings and that he can win with his toughness and strength of will. He must be asking himself if all those critics were right all along. He must be asking himself if it is worth pulling himself up and trying again. Well.... YES YOU CAN, KELLY!!!! :bbb:fire:twisted:rosstheboss:boxer There are so many things that Kelly can work on and that he can improve and incorporate into what he does already. He can use his left better, he can learn to do some things on the inside, go to the body better. He can learn to mix his attack up and use a little variety. These are things that he can do. He's never going to be a slick, counter puncher or someone with speed and quickness, but he can work on a lot that will serve him very well. Yeah the cutman sucked but Sergio was great. Sergio turned it on in the Championship rounds while Kelly couldnt. Whether it was the eye bothering him or his legs going on him, Sergio took it to him and took his straps. But he can regroup and come back. There is a lot of potential yet to be fullfilled. But this is boxing and sometimes...a lot of times...potential goes unfullfilled. He knows how to win and he knows what it's like to get his ass kicked and lose. Remember how to win, work on some of things that got your ass kicked and DO IT!!!!
Its hard to make a one dimensional fighter complete. Hes always going to get his ass kicked by savvy technicians, kind of suprised Arum took the fight. He would have had an easier time with Paul Williams.
This is easily the best thread started by a Pavlik fan since his loss. Way to stick up for your guy:good
Funny thing is....Arum said he had never seen Martinez fight before! He might be looking at his matchmaker a little after this.
I agree Williams is a better style matchup for Kelly. Not easier, just better. But there are things that even a one dimensional fighter can do against Sergio. You don't have to be a slickster to work on your non dominant hand and learn to mix up the attack. Sergio has his own set of flaws just like any fighter but Kelly couldnt do anything about it, especially as the fight wore on. I'm not saying he will roar out of the corner and ko Sergio ala Willams/Quintana but Kelly can do somethings to blunt or at least diminish Sergio's advantages enough to keep him right in it.
Pavlik is like the Trinidad, Darchinian, Tua type fighters. Exciting but one dimensional. You have to match them according. The problem is HBO doesnt understand this and tends to force fights on fighters they shouldnt be in. As I said, Paul Williams would at least be there for Pavlik to hit, and his defense is somewhat skecthy, so its easier for a guy like Pavlik to face a high volume fighter like Williams than chase down a fighter like Martinez.
saying "yes we can" would be what you are referring to and would also imply I have any affect on what Kelly does, smartass (j/k) but....yes he can :deal
True, he can improve, and I think he was making some good adjustments, just that Martinez is hard to beat when you have a style like Pavliks. HBO is stupid, because now they have a champion that noone wants to watch, instead of a possible blockbuster all out war with Williams and Pavlik that people would watch ten times in a row regardless of the outcome.
Of course he can. One loss or two, it's not the end of the world, just ask Martinez! Quality thread from a true Pavlik fan, just like your other, congratulating Maravilla! :thumbsup
a couple losses didnt kill many a fighters career. Shane is the champ again and in one of the biggest fights of the year. A couple of guys just "having his number" and having a stylistic advantage over him didnt stop him. It doesnt have to stop Kelly. There are so many little things Kelly can work on that his skill set, however limited some think it is, will allow him to do. Will it be enough to overcome Maravilla's style? Can't say. Sergio is very talented and a bad style matchup for Kelly. Moreso than I thought and gave him credit for going into the fight. But Kelly was right in it until Sergio stepped on the gas...so I still have faith.
yes it would. williams will be very tough for anyone but people who are there to be hit do get hit by kelly.
He has the potential. He proved that by capturing the middleweight title. What he needs to do is get a real trainer. Lowe is a good guy but he's severely outmatched at the top level. A big part of boxing is in fact the trainer. He needs someone who is going to show him how to use his size inside. Someone who can teach him how to throw something other than the right cross. And of course the footwork and observations of his opponent. A lot of boxers prepare for lunging shots by taking an additional step back. Kinda like what Klitschko did against Ibragimov and what Calzaghe did against Hopkins. You can't always look at an opponents feet and know what they are going to do. Especially with Martinez and Hopkins. All of these things can be corrected.
