    Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker... :patsch

    [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pernell_Whitaker[/ame]

    Nickname
As a youngster, Whitaker was known to friends and family as "Pete", and when he began to emerge as a top amateur, fans in his hometown of Norfolk used to serenade him with chants of "Sweet Pete." This was misinterpreted by a local sportswriter as "Sweet Pea", and when this erroneous report came out in the local newspaper, the new nickname stuck.

I would say May although sweet pea had a great defense as well but I just like the way Floyd stands up and the pocket and block n rolls everything to where sweet pea was ducking and dodging

Floyd is much better in the pocket than Pete was.

It was the quickest resource I could think of to back up what I was saying. JUIC3 never had known that Whitaker was known as "Pete" So, instead of just expecting him to take my word for it, I offered a source. Try again, hater.

I'd go with May, simply because like RJJ, Sweet Pea's defense slows down with age. May's defense is technically sound and relies less on atheticism. As a result, his defense will still be extremely good were he to lose speed.

I think it is this perception of Floyd that is a basis for people selling him short as a fighter. I must say I disagree that he puts effort into 'not getting hurt'. Its odd that while many praise Whitaker for his defensive prowess, they chastise Floyd as fighting scared. Perhaps to some extent Floyd has earned the perception by not letting his hands go enough, but this is the thing; To be that good defensively, you have to also be selective offensively. Floyd's pot-shotting technique is a part of this. His hands are so fast that if he's throwing one precise shot at a time, its very difficult to counter him. When you let your hands go recklessly, that's when you get caught with shots you don't see coming. Floyd fights to win, not to look pretty. You likely won't see Floyd in a firefight unless its necessary to win a fight but that doesn't mean he's somehow scared of getting hit, or he's 'hiding a china chin behind that shoulder roll' as some have put it. The dude had many fights in the past in which he out-brawled opponents and sat in the pocket the whole fight. With time and experience, he's adopted a more methodical technique. When Mike Jordan was young he used to attack the basket with reckless abandon. As he aged and developed his overall game more, he began using the perimeter shot and that classic fadeaway to pace himself and conserve energy; he played smarter with age, and Floyd is just fighting smarter(not just more cautiously)with age.

Speaking of scoring margins, there is no other fighter today that is even close to Floyd in plus/minus, from the the standpoint of hitting your opponent and not getting hit... I'm not even sure historically who is in the same ballpark(besides Pernell I'd imagine); I'd have to do that research. So I must disagree on that point as well.

But that's the thing, Whittaker was outfighting guys inside (not countering inside after luring men in) and evading shots.

I'm not saying that's a basis to say Whittaker's defence is better, because in terms of pure defence (which is what this thread is) then i don't know if that plays a part. But let's not sell Whittaker's brilliance short. He had another dimension on Mayweather imo, Mayweather has many himself, i'm not ashing him at all here.

Il go with Mayweather, when Pea got older and his reflexes went he was easier to hit, where as Floyd will always be hard to hit even when he slows down..

No one is lying to themselves cause this is as close as close can be. You can make a case for either fighter, they are both defensive masters, they both made their opponents look like fools. Have you ever seen a fight that was so close where you picked fighter A but you couldn't argue if the fighter B got the decision, that's what's like to me. Sweet Pea was my favorite fighter then and Floyd is my favorite now, bottom line it's to close to call for someone to be lying to them selves if they picked Sweet Pea .

Bingo. Floyd could fight till hes Bhop and Toney age with his defense. Pernells couldnt last the test of time because its based on reflex not technique.
