You guys are acting like Whittaker is Roy Jones. It's true that his reflexes were ridiculous and of course, when they diminish that's a major asset gone, but Whittaker was still a master boxer and still knew how to block, especially to the body etc. I understand what you all are saying because i said it as well in this thread. But don't exaggerate it.

You're making him out to be Hilario Zapata or Roy Jones.

Whitaker definitely did do blocking as well as slipping and range control. He had a totally rounded D in every area; he did the full whack.

 

He blindly battles against anything Mayweather. Just brush it off.

His ring generalship actually factored into his defensive brilliance, he's simply one of the best fighters ever.

Yeah, sorry, I misunderstood you (teeto). I agree that Whitaker was just an all-round defensive genius with no holes in his game like Floyd and Roy. The best defence that I've ever seen.

Whether I'd class him as a defensive fighter or not is another story....

 

They are both experts in the field of not getting hit and being in position to hit back. I'd rather watch Pernell Whitaker's defense than Floyd Mayweather Jr's.

Well that's a good point, i usually go on the contrary myself. He did fight defensive fights, such as the Azumah Nelson schooling. But he fought many a bout as a boxer, not a defensive minded one, but a centre ring general, who dominated that area of the ring with his jabs, body-work etc etc. Like i say, he has another dimension/gear on Floyd imo.

 

Haha. Well yeah, Zapata always had guard high, and deflected shots well etc. But them reflexes, well they speak for themselves, they were ridiculous. Whittaker is just better though imo.
