Jack Johnson vs. Rocky Marciano

I do not hold it against him, however, the fact remains that he was in danger of being stopped because of facial damage in two of his fights.

Johnson was knocked out by Choynsky, he may have been short of his prime in experience ,and physical development, but to ignore the fact that it occurred would be wrong.imo.
It is something we must factor in when trying to draw a conclusion as to how a fight would go between them.

I did see a pic of the cut, I think it compares to the first Charles Marciano cut over the eye Rocky got.


Nothing worse than that. And Marciano was cut in the 4th round in the Charles fight, and he battle a good 12 rounds plus with it.

 

Jack Johnson had only 6 professional fights(4-1-1) when he fought choynski. He only weighed around 168lb. This does not count against him at all

 

I'll take johnson's snapping jab and clinching to win him a war in this matchup. maybe on points. but I really wouldn't be suprised if rocky would knockout Johnson.

 

Correct. The foremost expert on Marciano on this board who seldom posts these days was Marciano_Frazier.

The poster Marciano_Frazier was an objective Marciano fan and very well read. He agrees, and adds he saw a photo of the cut and it was harsh looking.

Not so. Researchers ( not box rec ) count at least 20 Jack Johnson fights prior to meeting Choynski. Check the Cyber boxing zone page's for Johnson and you'll see.

 

He was busted up against Walcott in 1952..and he had his nose split open DOWN TO THE BONE against Charles in their second fight in Sept.1954....and we know how that turned out!!! Marciano had a knack of coming up with the big punch when needed...and I'm pretty sure that the Rock would be no different in a fight with Johnson...

No it's not. Maybe he has down-syndrome or something. He's not fully all there, and not in a crazy sense.

Everett Skehan also said that Marciano was the fiercest, most determined, and relentless fighter that ever lived. Do you agree with his word on that? I can accept one thing might be factually more validated than an opinion, but if you read the book Skehan does have a slight habit of embellish sometimes. More so than the guy who wrote The Rock of His Times I think.

Johnson boxed at quite a different pace holding and punching and holding again. The pace of Marciano/Walcott 1 or Marciano/Charles 2 was not ring around the Rosie. Johnson was a strong man but I dont think hr survives Marciano's punch rate per rd. You can fight a Willard 25 rounder or 10 with Marciano...different pace

There is a question mark over the Dempsey Flynnn affair,Flynn was not a big puncher,but Dempsey was still green.
Was it on the level? In his book Dempsey says so.
Choynsky was a very big puncher ,Johnson was well short of his prime,but I have allways accepted the result as it stands.
