I said something similar to this in another thread. I completely agree that the guy has the tools to still matter at 160 or even 168, BUT he has to get at least a proper trainer and maybe a whole new corner. Or maybe explain to his cutman that he often uses both eyes when fighting and it would be ideal if he could see.

Point taken, although I think he's already surpassed Lacy who doesn't really own any quality wins. Taylor x2 at the time I think is better than Sheika or Reid. Maybe not in hindsight, but at the time.

Problem is that Pavliks is a "never was" rather than a "has been" who was ever anything special.

come back to what? he was a hype job and has been exposed - beating JT will be his peak and that is not a great win, only a good one.

In my mind this is a sad and dangerous situation in a very brutal sport, but that **** right there is funny as hell!

As long as Pav isn't fighting guys with better than average movement then I think he'll be fine.

I'd like to see him in with Froch.

Even there, I like his jabs and straights a lot, he just doesn't throw them from angles at all. I feel like a good trainer could at least get some improvement in that area. I'm really excited to see what Cotto does now with Steward in his corner.

:good Pavlik-Froch would be awesome. Both have very obvious limited flaws but decent digs and hearts of lions.

pavlik was overrated the whole time his two best wins were against taylor who himself was overrated. ok so taylor scraped past hopkins good win but after that all he did was barely outpoint little junior middles like ouma and spinks (i had spinks winning) so it really wasnt a great win for kelly neither was miranda as weve all learned now was a one dimensional banger with a padded record. other than that he beat rubio lockett espino LOL come on he cant come back because he was never there in the first place

TBH, I'd be surprised if Cotto makes any noticeable changes. Perhaps he'll pick and choose his 'in-fighting' a bit more.

Pav could also learn how to feint.

:thumbsup All action fight, what's not to love.

For a fighter who was once considered part of the "elite", he has the worst muscle tone(or rather lack thereof), of any non-heavyweight fighter I have ever seen.

Even when Thomas Hearns was fighting at 147 and looking a bit skeletal, he had notably better muscle tone than Pavlik.

I think Pavlik needs to work on conditioning especially with plyometrics. Something to give him that energy and quick movement. He's a bit slow in my opinion especially compared to the quicker but older (35 yrs.) Sergio Martinez. If he can work on that part, I think he can edge out a lot of the competition.

My other question about Pavlik, and this is something that a lot of you have already touched upon, is whether he has the focus, desire, hunger, and passion to want to be better. He has some passion, but does he have that deep hunger that an up and coming boxer who wants to prove himself possesses? Pavlik is like his nickname, the ghost. A bit melodramatic, perhaps it's unfair to judge him on that since that has always been his personality.

A fresh start could do Pavlik some good. If his personal life is as toxic as it seems he needs to get that in order. Than an overhaul of his corner could be a good change of pace. Pavlik seems to have a dark clould over him right now and a an overhaul might be the way to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if he rematches Martinez. He would go in the underdog but its a fight he can win with some adjustments. But if he's going up to 168 soon, then maybe he should skip the rematch. Go to 168 with a new team, grab a quick easy win or two against guys that make him look good, and with proper match making he could be a player at 168.

He would be embarrased by someone like Ward or Dirrell. But guys like Abraham, Froch, Kessler, Green, etc are all winnable and big money fights that Pavlik can win especially after they get through beating up on each other. Pavlik needs matched properly and he won't be the all-time great some thought he might be but he can still be a major guy at 168.
