when i change stance i feel i am vulnerble to the orthodox fighters left hook more than his right hand. simply because it has less distance to travel, you cant see it and potentially a knockout shot. just watch donaire vs daryichaynakhshuef i was watching valero sparring, he makes boxing look easy. even when he is sparring with the likes of morales he has his right hand low and rarely is caught with the left hook? also not many southpaw fighters like calzaghe, valero, and another great southpaw from back in the 50's - dont have their right hand glued to their faces rather further out , usually pawing with it like fencing. so it makes me think what defense do these guys have against a left hook. to all you southpaws out there what are your thought? winky wright is a fighter which doesnt go into this category cos he has both hands glued to his face with minimal head movement thoughts
I was going on the presumption he was asking for a method other than blocking as he made reference to the way Calzaghe paws.
Having the hand out IS the defence. You'd benefit from doing the hand-fencing against them yourself. It makes it easier to block or redirect a hook. Even easier to just punch inside it. That said, the worst thing in the world is a southpaw without a right hook. A good orthodox fighter will hook the living **** out of him all day.
Shoulder roll, Hands up, Block, Step back. lean back, use everything, cause for me as a southpaw that is the dangerous punch, the straight right don“t bother me what so ever. Another thing, keep his left busy with your right by throwing a lot of jabs and hooks with your right, that will make him have the same problem as you have with his left hook. But yes, that is the dangerhand for me, not the straight right. The predator
Seconded. It works great mirrored as well, I'm orthodox and have great success with this momentarily against a southpaw.
Anyone is vulnerable to anything. It depends on the positioning of the fighter. I would say generally an aggressive orthodox fighter (vs southpaw) the right hand is the best tool. I would also say that generally a counter southpaw (vs orthodox) the right hook is the best tool. The same applies if you switch stance obviously. There are so many examples of these moves having success i.e. straight right of Floyd vs Judah. Alterntiavely the counter hook of Corley vs Floyd and Cotto.
Yes... eat them left hooks damn lefties! I set mine up by throwing a left-jab, hoping they'll counter with the right-hook or jab, and then I counter with my own left-hook. Usually works if I don't do it too often.
