How do you think Roberto Duran would do against the top welterweights and middleweights of the 1940's and 50's?

Well the welters, he'd be a fantastic addition and we'd have some great fights. You can't come out of that unscathed though.

    We're talking-

    Basilio
    Gavilan
    Armstrong
    Zivic
    Burley
    Bratton
    Bell
    Robinson
    Saxton
    Cocoa Kid

    and more

Middleweight is of course going to yield a lesser win ratio for Duran, here we have-

    Graziano
    Zale
    Cerdan
    LaMotta
    Robinson
    Overlin
    Soose
    Hostak
    Olson
    Fulmer
    Giardello
    Williams
    Bolden
    Bivins
    Charles

    etc etc

It would be very interesting to see if Duran could upset Fulmer, likely a bit of a stretch though, he should be in the underrated thread.

The big thing here is are we taking Dooran at his best at these weights or on a month in month out basis? We saw great inconsistencies from him obviously. We probably have to paint the whole scenario.

Exactly, if he's just thrown into the era he's picking up losses, and i think that's what the thread is getting at. Personally i think even if we do that he does well at 147, the whole thing of him being inconsistent at that poundage a la his forays at 154 and 160 is overrated. He had a brilliant run and time at 147.

Just remember tho his foray at 147 was 4-7 fights or close. Two huge wins in that of course. On his form vs Palomino and SRL 1 he was awesome.

He would pick up some awesome wins but be too inconsistent IMO, to be as highly regarded as he is today.

Yeah it's true that when he left 135 for good for 147 it wasn't for many fights ultimately, but the formbook shows he is top class there nevertheless. Don't know if it's worth much but he had plenty of over the limit non-title fights as lightweight champ, the majority of them were at light-welter though if we're being strict.

But anyhow, in my opinion he does very well at welter here, but still not as good as he would in the same lightweight era (or any).

    Just my chip in.

He's not very inconsistent at 147 though GP. The only thing to speculate on is what JT said, he never had a 'full' career at the weight.

    Yeah.

    Okay then here goes-

let's pick apart Basilio vs Roberto Duran. I'd prefer it if we didn't delve into the 'on' or 'off' days of either man, imo it spoils it. Let's just look at styles, effectiveness etc and pick a winner

Although he wasnt at 147lbs very long and suffered one of his worst performances at the weight. Perhaps his career would have been simialar, he moves up to Welter gets some awesome wins then parties it out.

Just my thoughts on the fights taking each men on their best day

    Basilio - Basilio
    Gavilan - Gavilan
    Armstrong - Duran
    Zivic - Duran
    Burley - Even
    Bratton - Duran
    Bell - Duran
    Robinson - Robinson
    Saxton - Duran
Cocoa Kid - Duran (slight edge in series)

    Graziano - Duran
    Zale - Zale
    Cerdan - Cerdan
    LaMotta - Lamotta
    Robinson - Robinson
    Overlin - Overlin
    Soose - Duran
    Hostak - Duran
    Olson - Duran
    Fulmer - Fullmer
    Giardello - Giardello
    Williams - Williams
    Bolden - Duran
    Bivins - Bivins
    Charles - Charles
