Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams vs David "The Terminator" Tua - Who would have won?

How was Wilams stamina ?

 

I think TheGreatA may've pinned this one down. Williams certainly had the tools to outbox Tua, but his downfall may've been that he wasn't opposed to slugging it out with anyone. Normally it got him by just fine because of his overwhelming physical attributes. However, that's a major stylistic liability against someone with the durability and punching power that Tua had. Still a tough call. One of those fights that would just depend on the night for either man.

 

Fairly good I'd say, always came in shape and did well in late rounds against Machen and Terrell. Also scored quite a few late round knockouts, like Tua.

 

Reading this vaunted estimations of Williams has me all atitter with mirth. There is nothing like the evidence of a sincere man-crush on a spring day. Outside of KO'ing the decidedly mediocre Terrell, I am really wracking my brain to recall anyone of note that Williams put out.

 

Does anyone have Williams-Terrell?

 

I always get amused when someone brings up Williams going down against Ali or even Mac Foster.i don't know what you guys do for a living,I am not a pro boxer but I am pretty damn sure if a cop blasted my insides out with a 357.magnum,I probably wouldn't be quite the same myself at my job.Oh,I do think Cleve would put on a good show.Howard Cosell described Williams as a "murderous hitter,the kind of fighter that contenders avoided.

 

I seen Tua get KO'd by Savon with one punch in the amateurs, you can improve but if you get KO'd in the amateurs it can happen in the pros. David is not without defense and he has power but like I said Williams had good hand speed and power but can he go 10 with out getting into a trade

 

As a 17 year old kid Tua walked into a bomb from an all time , murderous punching Cuban professional who should be rated here regarding power in his own right ... as a pro Tua w=showed a first rate chin ... surviving bombs from Ike and Lennox, flush and hard ... the Rachman knockdown was much like Foreman/Young where an exhausted fighter collaspes ... Rachman barely made him blink in the 19 rounds they fought ...

Tua definately had limitations but his chin was not one ...

 

Tua was also standing flat footed when Rahman knocked him down after the bell, he obviously was not hurt, this is different to what happened to Rahman when Tua hit him after the bell, Rahman has a first rate chin if not a great one. I just can't see anyone ever going toe to toe with Tua.

 

I agree, but the point was made about him being no steel-chinned fighter. Fighters learn to roll better and Tua learned good defense in the pros, if he were to lose it would be for his lack of spark, he never should have drew with Rahman and the Jeff Wooden fight would make me believe that version would lose to Big Cat.

 

How can you over-emphasize these two fights yet forgive a dozen or so miserable performances by Williams, ignore the fact Tua KO'd 3 heavyweight champions, and the fact that William's greatest performances were largely against no-hopers?

This just seems another case of unequally applied criteria in the judgement of fighters of different era's. I guess this should be expected in a forum that labels itself "classic"...

 

Given your obvious disdain and constant criticism for the forum and the majority of it's users (i guess) i am a little surprised you can be bothered with us mate. It's nice that you represent one end of the stick but sometimes i wonder how you put up with us.

 

My pick was Tua by KO but in trying to find a way Williams can win, I would have to say, Tua was outboxed, could be outboxed and was lethargic and lacking in spark at times, especially when he had 250lbs on his 5"10 frame. Tua is a natural puncher but his will and lack of spark in fights comes to mind.

 

Indeed, it's hard to 100% rely on either of these two. Seamus brings up good questions as does the opposite side. Questions abound.

It's a 50-50 fight.
I dont have much faith in Williams' chin, but David Tua is capable of getting clearly outboxed by anyone half-decent.
