From what I understood, he really did used to have good power but because of his shitty hands, he adopted a slappy style and stuck with it to avail. This reinforces that understanding. Interesting post, thanks.

Contrary to his utterly hilarious 'slappy Joe' nickname, Calzaghe was a very spiteful puncher in his earlier days. It's just sad that he was ravaged by hand injuries, forcing him to adopt a more open handed punching style in order to preserve his fragile hands.

He could still stand back and bang one in when he had to towards the end of his career.

He hit Kessler with some big shots.

despite what i've said in the past, i do think he had some beef when he wanted to. he just rarely did and sacrificed technique and power for speed; it worked to his style and strengths. i should probably checked out more of his early career (i've only seen the sporatic early joe bout and really only know his career from veit on)

as an outspoken hater of calzaghe, i'll jump in on that one. cause most of us calzaghe haters have only seen, for the most part, his post lacy career. i've gone back and watched some earlier ones but his biggest fights were when he couldn't punch worth a ****. his earlier abilities get lost in the shuffle. even still, he did have a lot of TKO victories ala Manfredo, indicative of speed and dominance but not necessarily power

At the time of the Eubank fight Calzaghe was seen pretty much as a puncher.

Ive got a DVD spanning Joe's career and he was an absolute animal back in the day with his punching before he had brittle hands. He could have been truely top 25ATG with his ability, its a shame about the resume.

if he could back off bhop/kessler/roy jones with speed alone shouldn't malignaggi have been able to hold guys like hatton and cotto back with his speed?

to be honest paulie did sting cotto occasionally but i see your point. calzaghe had SOME power but he was more a case of volume. i see him more of an ali type puncher: archie moore said ali didn't him hard he just hit you so often on the top of your head you got dizzy. in the kessler fight especially he showed brilliant timing and was able to catch the viking flush on a number of occasions.
