What one fight do you guys feel was Haglers best performance/ the one where he was most in his prime. I'd say that he had faded slightly by the time of Hearns and that the Sibson fight was his most brilliant all round performance. Many seem to forget how great a boxer he was and base their opinions on his last three fights (on the general at least). He showed lateral movement, a superb jab to wear Sibbo down before closing the show with deadly accurate combinations. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXQ4o85ak9s[/ame] Your thoughts? :good
Early 80's. He still had the early athleticism that he showed in the 70's but also the added experience of 50+ professional fights.
Hearns was the best win for Hagler but he had peaked several years before. 1980-'83? Minter, the second Vito fight, or first Hamsho... he looked great in these fights IMO. The Sibson and Scypion wins were fantastic as well. He dominated all of these men. When he stepped up the competition we was not as dominate though... he won a close decision over Roberto Duran in '83. So, maybe it was the level of opponent that made Hagler look so great form 1980- pre-Duran? Who knows? Hagler is an all-time great though. He was never seriously hurt in a fight and his only knockdown is questionable. He was never dominated in a fight and all 3 of his losses were close. He avenged 2 of the losses and never got a chance to avenge the 3rd (LSD12 Leonard, many felt Hagler won).
Nah, if anything that was the last peak Hagler. Marvin was just determined to destroy Hearns that night, I don't think even a handful of middleweights could have gone toe to toe with Hagler that night.
hagler could do it all. lefty, righty, box or brawl, long range or inside. a fantastic all rounder. I think a turning point was the vito draw. he became so sour and mean after that it gave him a ruthless edge that took him to another level. even now regardless of how much respect he has for old foes, the deepnes of the level of hate he programed himself into to face them that hes still not so fond of guys he fought. he was just so driven. hagler was beter before the superfights but they made his name.
