Mayweather just has to win for the good of the sport...it would be pretty unedifying having a proven drugs cheat take the victory. Its bad enough having the **** on p4p lists
Riding a punch is all well and good, but unlike James Toney in his prime, he is being hit and noticeably so. He takes the sting out of the shot but is still hit with a scoring shot. He's better than often given credit for, but he takes shots that he wouldn't need to if he kept his hands up a little higher. Let's not make excuses for him - that stuttering, ponderous offence is part of his style. He got away with it in the past because of the opponents he was facing. I obviously don't think Froch is a bad fighter because he isn't, but he was outfought on Saturday. There is a reason Froch didn't rush in after Kessler - it was Kessler. Every time Carl got aggressive Kessler would step out and drive a shot into the body, or jab him. So, it's only a victory for you Rob if you want to ignore the good work Kessler did on Saturday. Kessler won the fight, whatever way you want to cut it.
There are sound technical reasons why Carl Froch uses a slip defence rather than a gloves up/block approach. If he had had his hands up blocking shots at 2:12 of the 12th round against Taylor he would have lost his title.
Emmm... I'm not sure it was Froch's low defence that allowed for that as much as Taylor gassing and Froch finally catching up to him. He pulled it out, but his performance was mediocre from 1-11. He needed to knock Taylor out and he went for it. Gutsy but technically dreadful - he looked bamboozled throughout. Against Dirrell he looked ponderous because his shots had so far to travel and he more or less neglected his body attack. Dirrell would miss, Froch would make a wild, uneducated swing and get countered. Against Kessler, he simply got beaten to the punch,. This is not a difficult concept. His ponderous, stop-start offence has been there in his last four fights, so I don't see why people start saying he was off-form. He's looked **** since that close fight against pascal.
Errrm...how many times have I got to say this, the received wisdom that Taylor gassed is just plain lazy analysis. Taylor was forcing the fight up until 1 minute into the last round when Froch finally caught up with him and landed a peachy right that badly rocked him....thats when he got on his bike, nothing to do with gassing, the man was hurt. You obviously can't be bothered to check out the fight and the point at 2:12 in the 12th where if Froch had been doing what you suggest he would have lost his title.
I've watched it twice. I don't recall Taylor taking the fight to Froch particularly strongly, he looked exhausted in the previous round too. I'm not saying that Froch didn't take advantage of the situation, he did and well done to him for it, but he still looked **** for 11 rounds previous. Why? Because of his lazy tendencies as a fighter. Why else do you think his trainer was reading him the riot act?
I think there is a middle ground here. Taylor was fading a bit but was hardly dead on his feet at the start of the 12th. Froch didn't look **** for 11 rounds.... it wasn't a Bruno vs Bonecrusher type job - he did win 3 or 4 of the previous rounds, mostly in the 2nd half of the fight. I agree that the hands down slipping technique worked because he countered Taylor with a hard shot that he never saw coming - from then on he was a sitting duck.
Thank you :thumbsup...plus the press row had Froch needing to win the last round to take the fight, so despite looking awful as threethirteen suggests he was actually competetive. I don't think that Froch is lazy as such, I just don't think that people particularly like his style, two different things completely.
I watched this fight last night. It was a good fight, though technically quite sloppy. Kessler definitely won by a few rounds.
Of course it wouldn't, but it won him a world title...trying to change now would be pointless and counterproductive
watch the 12 round back. Taylor actually wins the 1st minute of the round. he was tired but in no way gassed. Froch is as tired. he just pulled it out the bag.
Yeah he wasn't busy because Kessler was stronger than him and pushed him back. I know thats hard to believe because Froch is considered the incredible hulk as far as strength and power but it actually happened. What other conclusions are to be drawn from the fact Kessler was on the front foot the entire night? Froch has never been particularly busy in his career so I don't know exactly what you were expecting there. He's a guy that throws big punches, you can't leap in with your whole body and expect 1000 punches a fight. People need to realize performances are not just decided by one man. Everything the other guy does impacts upon it.
