For a short spell in his prime Mayorga was an absoloute animal in there, the guy that beat Six Heads Lewis and Forrest was something else.
The Mayorga rematch was closer but I had Mayorga winning like others here said because Forrest was too tentative. It was similar to the Mosley-Forrest rematch where both fighters seemed scared of each other except Mayorga wasnt scared of Forrest. For the record I also thought Mayorga deserved it against Spinks. Spinks was given way to much credit for his defense but his offense sucked.
First fight, Forrest was caught unprepared in a brawl against a tougher, harder hitter, stronger fighter. He did well for a spell because he was such a class boxer, but got hit with a heavy right hand and knocked out, suddenly. The rematch, I scored for Mayorga, close but clear. He won 5 of the first 7 on pure aggression and desire. He ran roughshod over Forrest, outlanded him in the rounds he won, had him running away and slipping all about, hurting him notably on several occasions. Forrest then seized the momentum, but failed to close in the 11th and 12th, was forced into all out retreat at points in both frames without landing more than a couple significant punches and thus lost the fight.
I think Mayorga played on Forrest's mind especially the rematch. Vernon was doing well in the rematch but wasn't as prepared mentally as Mayorga who thought he could KO him whenever he wanted. Both great fights to watch.
I remember when Mayorga put his hands down against Tito as well and took his best shots... What a beast.
Every one thought Him taking those shots from Forrest was amazing, but it dosent compare to him taking the 3 flush left hooks from Trinidad.
well, against Tito, Trini landed an uppercut after that and wobbled the hell out of Mayorga. That was a terrible idea.
Non-convention can be a mother****er in certain instances. Styles make fights, but alot of times wild-style boxing can wreak havoc on a technically precise operator. It's still fighting, FCS.
I also thought Forrest beat Mayorga in the rematch but took a beating all over. He was scared for the first few rounds then he started to get some composure. Mayorga was a beast back then at 147. Wonder what Mayorga v Trinidad fight wouldvde looked like at that weight.
